Description

King Shaka International Airport opened in May 2010, was voted the top Regional Airport for Africa in the Skytrax World Airport Awards in 2014 for the fourth year running, and was second only to Cape Town in the 2013 Airports Council International (ACI) for the Best Airport in the Middle East/Africa category. It is also rated by ACI the Best Airport in the World with 5 million passengers in 2013 and runner up in 2014 for the same category. Currently it is placed 32nd in the Skytrax Top 100 airports.

King Shaka International Airport's retail facilities range from food and beverage outlets to specialty stores, clothing stores, bookstores and convenience stores. There is also a bank, foreign currency exchange facilities, a post office and duty-free shopping facilities. The latest development is a new service station that is being constructed at the airport creating convenience for airport users.Investment and growth surrounding King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) is a major economic catalyst in the region. Currently only 5% of King Shaka International Airport traffic is international, but this sector is a growth opportunity, and Airports Company South Africa works closely with the tourism and hospitality industry to promote KZN.

King Shaka International Airport was the host to the recent and successful ACI Africa conference in October 2014, and Durban has recently been chosen to host the 2015 World Routes Conference, which will attract the major decision makers in the airline and airport industry to our region. The airport was designed for passenger capacity to grow from 7, 5 million in 2010/2011 to 45 million by 2060. The 3.7km runway allows for the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747s to use the airport; and provision was made for a second runway when demand requires this.

King Shaka International Airport is focused on building skills and continuously trains its people. In this, it is supported by Airports Company South Africa, which is well respected within the international aviation industry, and has tried-and-tested systems that create a framework within which the company operates. The Airports Company South Africa maxim “Forward thinking, embracing change” also represents the company's focus as a good corporate citizen. Social Economic Development are a vital response to the socio-economic imperatives of the country, and Airports Company South Africa's social investment projects include mobility, health and welfare, job creation, community development and education, with particular focus on projects that boost infrastructure and education based on promoting tourism in South Africa.

King Shaka International Airport is also on a journey of transformation as we believe that is our corporate duty to include amongst others, capacity building, and empowerment of women, youth, and people with disabilities and to be part of the business opportunities at King Shaka International Airport.

Before i flew there recently, i had last been there in 2019, and so had mostly forgotten how it looked like. The airport looks old and worn, at least through my eyes, and for an international Airport, the standards don't seem that high. The staff was kind and helpful, which was a plus. The size is decent, a bit on the smaller size, but decent. I wasn't impressed by the runways though. They do require lots of attention, because there was too much old paraphernalia lying about, with uncut grass giving the runways an unkempt look. The plane also has to taxi for a good 5 minutes before it can take off. I guess the mantainence is not world class, but it was an otherwise decent experience there
Small international airport and great for travel within SA. If you have minors or grandparents traveling solo, they won’t get lost at this airport as it’s easy to navigate. Unfortunately the water crisis had hit KZN badly, including the airport and buckets of water were being provided to flush the toilets during my recent trip there. Besides that, the airport is clean, small and a great facility to get you to Johannesburg or Cape Town.
The signs are pleasantly clear and easy to use and direct you to where you need to be. The airport feels mildly dated / run down which explains the 4 stars. Not a bad experience.
Always a pleasant experience to arrive in the Shaka Airport, not the correct name, clean and busy but enough space to move with ease. Lots of shops and everything you need for a international Airport. A lot of bug brand car hire companies a short distance walking. Clean and covid rules are adhere to.
A very pleasant experience. The airport is neat and fully air-conditioned all around. The food court has plenty seats and quite a few take out options, should you need something to suffice your hunger. Shops themselves are quite pricy, mostly imported goods and brand names.
It was my first time experience to board an aeroplane , we were supposed to depart at 6:15, we ended up going out at 8:30. Saysafair airline is very much comfortable .
It's was quite disappointing for Safair passengers that arrived on the 11am flights on the 15/11/2022. The pickup zone was closed without any sort of notifications stating passengers must catch their rides on the street outside the entrance of the pickup zone. The staff was loafing around the entrance having fun. Nobody bothered to let the people know why the drop off was closed. This caused chaos on the street. After a long time I found out the pickup zone was closed in order to have an opening ceremony for new ticket boxes that was installed. Is this how international airports operate in South Africa?
Always loves this airport cos of the cleanliness and friendliness, the exit part is currently being worked on however there is another exit from the airport.I had to take pics from the food court as I wait for my flight
Parking is always a breeze and appreciate the Swissport crew. Thanks FlyCemair, 1st time propeller plane flight experience and the landing was absolutely soft! Cons -1 star here Mobile networks data coverage/ signal issues - When is this getting resolved? - It has been going on for ages already, 1 can't use data services in the airport building and close vicinity. The Woolworth's store is a gem, you can't forget essential essentials because you literally walk out into the store - Flowers - Wine - Flops
The experience was fascinating for horror and adventurous visuals. The snakes are not that scary because they are in a glass house. Beautiful place with lots and lots of activities, including the beach.
