Set in the dramatically beautiful Magoebaskloof area, this charming country hotel offers guests a chance to enjoy an idyllic and relaxing break in the countryside. Arriving guests are welcomed by an attractive entrance square with a magnificent mural and bronze bust of King Makgoba. Beyond the square lies the expansive view of the legendary leader's famous valley.

The Coffee Bean coffee shop has outdoor seating, as well as a comfortable indoor lounge with cozy fireplace. It serves all-day light snacks and meals, tempting cakes, gourmet coffees and freshly squeezed juice (in season). Walk through to the impressive Tlou Restaurant, where an extensive à la carte menu will whet your appetite. The expansive balconies offer al fresco dining, with views over the fertile valley. The Phoenix & Fireman Pub has an impressively long cedar bar, and huge fireplace, for those chilly winter evenings. Relax and enjoy the warm and inviting ambiance.

Rooms were OK, but they are definitely showing wear from years of use without sufficient maintenance. The restaurant service was not great as it seems management doesn't care about maintenance: Toaster was not working, no coffee beans for coffee -- I mean these things are terribly basic and simple to get right. Nearby activities: Hikes nearby.
Great views, decent hot water temperature for long showers, great shower head pressure and decent bedding. Enjoyed the hot stone full body massage! However, below requires attention - maintenance/ renovation of the bathroom tiling, drainage- off smell is consistent, shower glass - breakfast facilities were not working/ faulty, example: toaster and food warmers served cold food - the standard queen bed we used felt used/springy - white towels are preferred, considering mass use as is the bedding
Needs refurbishment everywhere, rooms, dining area, conference venues. All carpets to be removed, improved cleanliness, improved menu n cooking of the food. Needs a new take over n a make over. Has amazing views.Rooms: 2/5
This used to be a very opulent lodge. I guess the effects of Covid-19 are still there for all to see. The room quality and service have somewhat slumped. What saves the place is the stunning views Nearby activities: There is a great hike and waterfall awaiting those brave and strong enough for the trek.
The staff, especially at the bar really went out of their way to make us welcome. They didn't have the drink l wanted but the bartender suggested something else, which was equally good. We watched a soccer match in the bar, and it was fun fun fun Food & drinks: The food was just ok, nothing wow about it. My husband had T-bone steak and veggies which was just ok. I had lamb chops, which were ok and one of the chops was still a bit raw. Breakfast was also not wow, hot milk was done, l asked for it, the waiter said he would bring it but didn't. I asked for a omelette, which came nearly after l had my breakfast. I realised the staff l saw the previous day at the bar, were also being used as waiters for the restaurant. Nevertheless, with a bit of variety in the menu, the place will probably go back to what we know
Beautiful location and general ambience but the hotel is not adequately maintained. Visited because it was group conference venue. I had the worst room I ever had to occupy in my life. Completely wet not just damp. Terrible damp smell, door could not open properly, deck sagging, Horrible experience and definitely substandard for the rate charged. Clearly management knows about the state of this room and should not allow occupation.
The whole hotel needs maintenance and refurbishment.All the walls are damp.The showers and bathtubs needs to be replaced.The carpets needs to be replaced.We definiately did not get what we paid for.The staff is not at all professional.We booked here because we stayed here 2 years ago,and it was a pleasant stay.After this stay,I will not come back again.
Staff is exceptional, but it is obvious that management is failing dismally. Staff were trying their outmost to keep guests calm after all of us had to wait for over 3 hours for rooms to be ready. At breakfast, they ran out of basics...eggs, bread, no bacon, glasses. Juice was terrible. Management, locked up in office, not addressing frustrated guests. Toilets and bathtubs were dirty and not well cleaned. Otherwise,facilities are beautiful and the beds are comfortable. Better management and planning is required and extremely urgent. Also, I read the owner's responses to other reviews. What a bad defensive attitude. Yes, you are not Sandton, but you should read your guest reviews with appreciation. You sound like a little spoilt brat. 85year beautiful hotel will be ruined further by your terrible attitude and responses. You must appreciate your employees. They do their best and make it easier. Take little notes and work on planning, menu, clean toilets... the basics Big thanks to Itu at the bar, two ladies at reception, Makhanani at dining. Just for their customer service during a frustrating stay.
My highlight is the waterfalls hike.The falls were in it's splendour..... it was worthwhile in the rain and mud.... one can spend hour's at the fallsRooms: 4/5
I understand that the owner would like to keep the heritage. But really do recommend some updating to make it more comfortable for the guests. The carpets needs to be removed as it makes everything feel dirty and the bathrooms needs maintance or atleast shower curtains that wont show the mould and make you feel like you need to finish as quick as posibile. New bedding is also a recommendation. Its funny, there is a new card key system, therefor I do feel like the owner can settle to make some ammendments and still keep the heritage. The view and setting is the best, the rooms was just very dissapointing. I do recommend bringing clean water and bedding along with your stay and hope that changes can be made because there is a lot of potential, untill then I wont be having another stay or recommend anyone to stay.
