We went as a big group of 50 for a weekend of hiking. The reserve is massive. There is a trail up to the top which takes around 3.5 hours one way. From there it is possible to continue to the summit with another 2 hours walk. There is a very challenging 4x4 track which meets the walking trail at the top but is closed due to rain damage. On the way you see multiple waterfalls and streams especially after rains. It is worth hiking all the way for the views. If you are lucky you may get some snow on top. The trail is quite dangerous due to stream crossings and slippery paths so best done in a group. The accommodation huts are good. Food at the restaurant is also quite good but the order takes long if there are too many people. The roads inside are all gravel roads which can be tackled with a small car but must be very careful.
So much to do. 4x4 track is an awesome challenge and the bass dam is fun! Great farm and loads to do
A Great place for a family Adventure Breakaway!! You can go hiking, mountain biking, 4x4 Track riding, quadbiking and rock pool swimming. In the winter you might be fortunate enough to experience snow!!
We had the best time at Matroosberge!! The best service and people... And doggies!!!

Went with my hiking group, we stayed at YCMB, supper affordable. We swam, hiked, did yoga, braai, played games. The host and staff were accomodating. What a wonderful experience. Well done for managing to keep 50 guests happy.
This is a very unique place in the sense that you can find snow here in the winters in South Africa. Snow can be found at the top of the mountains, but not very common to touch it and feel it in South Africa. The walk to the spot where snow can be found abundantly isn't a very difficult one and you can even drive your 4x4 there as well. Parking can be a bit of nightmare after paying the entrance fees and driving for about 3 km on a gravel road, but not impossible as long as you are willing to prak on the grass. So, this is a very pleasant, family friendly, unique spot to visit on a weekend and very much recommended.
Stayed at the private campsite and had a wonderful time! Private bathroom - toilet, basin and shower setup inside a 5000 liter tank - unique and wonderful idea and amazing water pressure. Campsite was peaceful, stars were amazing and the hiking options are great. Staff were all very friendly. Really can't complain about anything and made for a fabulous weekend in nature.
Fantastic trail and well kept. We hiked the perdekop trail and everywhere were manageable. The reserve is clean even though it takes in a huge volume of people. I would definitely reccomend this reserve if you like hiking. There is something for everyone. From 1km to 14km and it is cheap to buy permits, you can also buy the permits online. Children under 16 enter for free and adults pay R50. You can also buy a yearly permit for R300. 10/10 whould reccomend.
Brilliant, our first time driving out to see the snow, what an awesome experience! Kiosk a little primitive, but who cares, we came for nature, and we had a lovely time driving on muddy jeep tracks through rivers and playing in the snow! Watch the weather during winter for snow days, plan it well, leave early cause you need to be out at 4pm, unless you booked a bed, or brought a tent! Enjoy!
