Paul Sauer Bridge

Description

The Paul Sauer Bridge, also known as the Storms River Bridge, is a deck arch bridge over the Storms River in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. The bridge is located on the Garden Route section of National Route 2, between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. At a maximum height of 120m above the Storms River, it was the highest concrete arch in Africa until the Bloukrans Bridge, 216m, opened on the same road in 1984.Structural designThe bridge was designed by Italian engineer Riccardo Morandi, and constructed between 1953 and 1956. It spans 100m and sits 120m above the river. The main span of the bridge consists of a reinforced concrete arch structure spanning between two concrete abutments located on the western and eastern sides of the river. The deck of the bridge consists of three main spans, the center span between the two abutments and the two approach spans up to the joint above the abutments. The reinforced concrete deck is supported by the arch by means of 12 sets three reinforced concrete columns or struts.Construction of the bridgeThe main arch structure was constructed in a unique fashion: the complete arch was divided into four semi-arches which were built with climbing formwork in an essentially vertical position on opposite sides of the gorge. These were then rotated and lowered into position in pairs to meet at the centre, thus forming the completed arch structure.

Very clean. Nice for a stop to refill the gas tanks, recharge the human batteries and get a bite to eat or use rest rooms. Bonus is a sightseeing walk alongside or under the bridge for amazing views
The storms river Bridge has beautiful majestic views of the mountains with an abundance of flowers and rocks. There is a Total fuel station with a convenience shop and a few other shops. An excellent place to stop and catch a bite. The viewing decks are also close by.
Still a marvelous piece of engineering and beautiful to see. There are several boardwalks with various viewing spots overlooking the awesome canyon. There are shops, places to eat and picnic as well as a petrol station. We always love stopping here for a peaceful break when traveling the garden route.
Very good experience of walking the bridge and also viewing it from the viewpoint behind Steers at the Total Petroport. You can walk under the bridge on one end and emerge on the other side, and then walk through the bridge on the road level to make your way back to the starting point. The only annoying thing is the cars passing by so fast and making that annoying zooming past noise. Otherwise, this is an incredible, free experience and you need to do it and feel being 120m above the river.
Honestly this is my favourite stop on the garden route, I'm not always sure why but it is. Nestled in lush greenery with stunning views, you truly feel in the wild. Stop here, grab a drink and some food and just enjoy the view!
If you’re afraid of heights this isn’t the place to be. But it has a great view from the top and you can walk below the bridge. It is a great intro if you’re considering the big bungee jump.
A beautiful sight and tourist attraction. I was not prepared for the long hike all the way to the bridge, but it was worth it. The views are breathtaking.
This bridge crosses a gorge which is absolutely breathtaking. You are able to stop at the filling station on the western end of the bridge and walk across, onto the bridge’s walkway.
This was a great test of faith cos wow I was so scared of walking on the bridge and having people makes it worse because they jump and shake the bridge while you walking which makes the experience scary but overall I had fun and it stretched my faith and I honestly thank the agency I used to travel for organising such an amazing experience for me.
Awesome!! Nice place to stop, can buy take away, coffee and other goodies. Nice deck to sit and relax, beautiful view of the bridge
