Great place for first-timers and tourists. More penguins during winter but very cold. You can smell them which isn’t great but the view is beautiful and is very child friendly. They may lose interest quickly depending on the age. Would not recommend paying to enter the national park. There is a free path on the right which allows you to see all the penguins.
I always go to the beach side in Summer.... at least once a year. This place truly is my happy place. But this was the first time going in Winter. So we went to the colony- viewing area. We were seriously overwhelmed with all the babies.... it was nesting season, and it was beautiful. There really is nothing as happy as a penguin running along a stoney path... Well maintained pathways, lots of small stairs up and down.
Remember your South African ID and get a local rate. It cost us less than R200 for 3 adults and 3 kids!!! That's nothing!!!! This was only access to the walkway area and viewing deck area, not the beach. But it was all our kids were keen to do. The penguins were so close, and the kids loved it. Highly recommend this outing.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Nice and relaxing walk from the parking area. There's a little market with traditional African souvenir sellers. The walk is free and you can see many penguins along the walk. It's child and wheelchair friendly. Great photo opportunities. You can choose to enter the paid area where you can actually swim with the penguins or the free walk. Locals and foreigners pay different prices, . A great place to visit. There are a few restaurants on either side of the walk, also a little tuck shop that sells chips and soft drinks. Enjoy!!!!
A Memorable Conservation Encounter at the Boulders Penguin Colony I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Boulders Penguin Colony, an incredible conservation initiative aimed at protecting the endangered African Penguin, also known as the Jackass Penguin. This experience left a lasting impression on me, and I highly recommend it to anyone with an appreciation for wildlife and conservation. Upon arrival, I was delighted to learn that entrance to the colony is either free with a Wildcard or available for a small fee. This accessibility ensures that more people can actively participate in the conservation efforts and learn about these fascinating creatures. The entrance fee is definitely worth it, given the exceptional experience that awaits. The first thing that struck me was the well-maintained planked walkway that guides visitors through the colony. This elevated pathway not only offers a comfortable stroll but also provides an unobtrusive vantage point to observe the penguins in their natural habitat. I was thrilled to witness these charming birds going about their daily activities, completely undisturbed by our presence. As I walked along the path, I was captivated by the sight of penguins nesting close to the fence. It was a heartwarming experience to witness their dedication to nurturing their offspring. The proximity allowed for an intimate view of their behavior and interactions, giving me a deeper appreciation for the importance of conserving their habitat. Beyond the main path, I discovered another gate leading to breathtaking spots where one can enjoy a picnic on the rocks and even take a refreshing swim in the bay. The natural beauty of the area, combined with the playful presence of the penguins, created a truly magical atmosphere. The clean white sandy beaches added to the charm, making it an ideal spot to relax and soak in the tranquility. In addition to the incredible visuals, the Boulders Penguin Colony offers an educational experience. Throughout the area, there are informative signs and displays that provide valuable insights into the lives and struggles of the African Penguins. Learning about their conservation status and the efforts being made to protect them left me feeling inspired to contribute to their preservation. Overall, my visit to the Boulders Penguin Colony was an unforgettable experience. From the well-maintained walkway to the intimate encounters with these remarkable birds, every aspect of the visit was thoughtfully designed to create a memorable and educational experience. I left with a renewed sense of awe for the African Penguin and a desire to contribute to their conservation. Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a unique and fulfilling experience, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to the Boulders Penguin Colony.
What an amazing experience. And not as costly as one would think. Its a scenery out of a painting. Good walk for kids and the elderly . Calm, beautiful and mesmerising.
Really beautiful beach and lots of penguins. There's a free area you can walk through and see some penguins next to the walking path but they weren't super active. The part you pay for was more expensive than we expected. We were able to get a better view of the penguins and they were more active but it wasn't as great as I was hoping. There was an area you could get in the beach instead of just seeing it from a boardwalk but there were no penguins in that area when we went. Maybe just bad timing??? Not sure if I'd pay for it again.
R40 Entry per adult for South Africans citizens. Bring your ID book or driver license to get your discount. You can pay with cash or card. Definitely worth the visit. Great family outing! Wheel-chair friendly. Beautiful views. You get to see some penguins up close. Best times to spot the penguins are early mornings and evenings.
Crowded with people, walkway allows a few great viewpoints of the Penguins. Maybe an early or later visit would be a better visit... cool spot.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Who doesn’t love penguins? I have never seen one before until I stopped here. So glad I did. They were all over the beach and boulders here mostly sunning themselves! Great elevated boardwalks with views of the oceans! If you are driving by you have to stop or make a half day trip of it from Cape Town. Driving through the local towns is interesting!
