Slave Lodge, Cape Town

The museum was a great experience for me since it was my first time to enter a MUSEUM in my life. I enjoyed very much, there's a lot of history to learn there about what happened to the slaves in SA and where thy were taken from and their heroes.. Very informative, nice museum to vist but it gets tiring, there is just too much to read. The museum does not have much interactive exhibits, very few videos and the headphones are disconnected so you will have to just stand there and read, read, read. I fairly enjoyed the tour, I got really tired of reading and almost left the museum within 20 minutes. However, I decided to drag myself along, I am glad I didn't give up in between because there were lots of artifacts to look at. It takes approximately 2hours 30min to thoroughly tour the museum this is if you read everything. If you are only browsing then it will take about 45min to 1hour without reading. If you dont like reading then this museum tour is not for you.

A must-do experience to understand the history of slavery in South-Africa but especially if it is your lineage. Must admit, the set-up lacked some structure and flow which made it difficult to navigate. I would have loved to see a bit more on the slaves and the "lifestyle"; specifics. One of my favorite museums. The museum gives such in depth of the history of slavery in South Africa. The museum is has spaces where you can interact with the surroundings. The museum which focus on showing history also show cases works from different countries and memoirs form pre apartheid times. The museum also hosted Sites of memory which gave a live performance based on Khoisan history and their experiences of slavery .

Iziko Slave Lodge is a large museum that offers a lot more than its name implies. While the location of the museum is what was once used as a place to lodge slaves, the museum goes much further than to retell the history of slavery. It starts there and then goes on to the Apartheid years and becomes a museum depicting the history of various struggles towards freedom. Slave Lodge also has important collections of various historical items, including ancient Egyptian artifacts and more recent items including arms, clothes and objects from 19th and 20th century South Africa.

For better and deeper understanding of South African history this museum is the must. We visited it with 2 teenagers and they spend long time there learning this side of their country's history.

Many of these reviews are spot on - so. many. words. in the museum, that is The information is presented in a very "noisy" way. Paragraphs upon paragraphs of words on one placard after the next. It really is not structured for consumption at all. Rooms are very dimly lit, making it difficult to even read the information presented. The exhibit about music, with selections to listen to, no longer had the headphones to listen, defeating the whole purpose. Another exhibit, which looked amazing, about current males and their roles in society was such a cocophony that I couldn't distinguish one video's sound from another. Very disappointing, because I really wanted to learn today.

The musuem has rich information but unfortunately it was not presented well, you would feel lost inside. Also, the presentation of the information is full of text which made it boring!. I have noticed in women rights section a huge insult to the islamic religion by quoting ayat from the Holy Quran and mislead the audiences with thier own incorrect understanding/analysis and claming that Islam is against the women rights! Which is not true. It is a shame for a city like cape town to insult 10% people of thier population

5/5 for the actual information on the Slave Lodge, 1/5 for the rest. When purchasing tickets at reception, there was no welcome and instead we felt like a nuisance for wanting to enter. During our visit 2 members of staff could be heard from multiple rooms away and the closer they got, the less we could hear the video exhibit infront of us. We gave up trying to listen, even after they passed as their voices echoed around the rooms. Unfortunately this repeated 30 minutes later when they returned. Staff here seem to be untrained in both customer service and general understanding of museum etiquette, especially in a setting as solemn as this. Very informative regarding slavery in the Cape, however a lot was repeated which became rather taxing as there's a lot to read. There is also little logic to the order of things so there was no real flow of information or exhibits. Headphones had been removed so you couldn't listen to quite a lot of interactive exhibits. Personally I felt a few rooms were out of place regarding the theme of the museum and as a result pretty irrelevant. We arrived at 14:46 and left nearly 2 hours later after a member of staff began passive aggressively switching off lights and exhibits around us. We didn't read everything and we spent nearly 2 hours with rooms we still planned to visit, so I'd suggest allocating at least 3 hours if you want the full experience. A courtesy comment from staff advising they'd be switching things off 20 minutes before closing would have been appreciated so we could ensure we visited what we wanted to before leaving, but instead we were followed by a silent shadow switching things off like she was fed up of our presence!
