Springside Nature Reserve

Description

The Springside Nature Reserve, proclaimed in 1948, is situated in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal. It conserves 21 ha of forest, grassland and wetland, and is managed by the eThekwini municipality and Hillcrest Conservancy. It was developed jointly by the Wildlife Society and the Hillcrest town board.Fauna and floraSome 150 species of bird have been recorded, including Forest weaver and visiting Crowned eagles. Plants include Tree ferns, Waterberry and Wild pomegranate. The reserve is relatively free of exotics, and a planned burning regime was implemented, which results in vigorous blooming of grassland flora when spring rains commence.Access and facilitiesThe entrance gate is opened at 7:30 am and closed at 4:00 pm. There are picnic and braai facilities, but no accommodation, and the resource centre can be booked for small meetings. A visitor can go on self-guided walks, or take part in organised wild flower (October, after burns) or monthly bird watching walks, which start at 7:30 am (summer) or 8:30 am (winter), on the second Wednesday of a month.

Absolutely a hidden gem.. well maintained easy trails with ablution and BBQ facilities. The view is spectacular and the calls of birds the untouched sounds of nature the tranquility.. coupled with the lightly flowing river sounds.. amazingly beautiful.. definitely a go again walking spot for all ages.. thank you to those that keep it well maintained and lush.... Picnic area: Beautiful picnic area close to the parking for utmost convenience.
A lovely place to hike. Some part of the trails are well maintained, but as you go further in on the longer trails in our case the Tanglewood trail, it gets a bit slippery since their is a lot of mud. It’s best to come with trekking poles for those ones since some parts are a bit steep. Overall, very enjoyable place and surprisingly quiet.
Family friendly, clean, safe and well maintained trails. Lots of parking with picnic benches and braai facilities. There are a few short trails that are roughly 2km each, and relatively flat. Suitable for families with young kids. Pro tip: the Sun Dial is a great learning tool for kidsVisited onWeekendWait time1 hr+Reservation recommendedNo
Such a lovely and tranquil place to relax for a picnic or to just go on a fun hike or outing... will definitely recommend :
Visited the reserve for the 1st time on Sun, 12th June. Beautiful gem. Altho still some flood-damage to part of picnic area & one of the footbridges, remains well kept & safe environment for gentle hike/walk. Clean solutions.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A very well maintained reserve with a picnic area and 5 different hiking trails, the longest being 2.2km. Perfect for get togethers or just a walk/hike. Due to rain, some parts of trail were slippery, so I would recommend trekking poles and proper shoes. There were also a lot of mosquitoes so carry Tabard. All in all, a delightful experience for nature lovers.
Has very nice walks and hikes and wonderful picnic areasVisited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
I enjoy the trail here. It feels like you are immersed in nature, and it's decent exercise without being too difficult. The view is gorgeous in places and there are some benches to rest on in the trail. I do think they need more and better trail markers. And they should keep the path cleared as we missed a path because a bush had fallen onto it. We had to backtrack.
Lovely park that you can picnic or braai in. A variety of different walking trails. We only managed to do the river trail because we didn't have the right shoes but we all had a great time. Will definitely be going back.
Such a lovely walk, amazing plants to see and full of insect life and wild birds, just calming and relaxing to walk.
