Swartberg Pass

Description

The Swartberg Pass on the R328 run through the Swartberg mountain range (black mountain in English) which runs roughly east-west along the northern edge of the semi-arid area called the Little Karoo in the Western Cape province of South Africa.HistoryThe Swartberg pass was built between 1881 and 1888 by Thomas Bain, son of the famous Andrew Geddes Bain who built Bain's Kloof Pass and many more. It followed their earlier construction of another pass in 1858, the Meiringspoort, through the same mountains but further east.It was built using convict labour, and opened on 10 January 1888. The dry-stone retaining walls, supporting some of its picturesque hairpin bends, are still in place and almost 120 years old.GeographyTo the north of the range lies the other large semi-arid area in South Africa, the Great Karoo. Much of the Swartberg is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The pass runs between Oudtshoorn in the south and Prince Albert in the north. The pass is not tarred and can be a little treacherous after rain, but offers spectacular views over the Little Karoo to the south and the Great Karoo to the north. The plant life along the pass is very interesting, many hundreds of species being found on the Swartberg.

So glad that i have had the opportunity to lay eyes on this beautiful pass... a must for every South African wanting to experience the beauty our country has to offer!
This road is a wonderful example of South Africa’s spectacular mountain passes, an inspiring engineering feat offering incredible sweeping views, hair-raising blind curves and stop drop offs. It is passable in a sedan if you drive slowly; we had no trouble at all on this gravel road in our little Suzuki Swift.
Beautiful as only God can make it, awesome scenery and beauty 360 degrees around when here.
Stunning road up the pass. Was great with the electric Mountain bikes.
This masterpiece of the best pass/road builder, Thomas Bain's, has now the status of a national monument. Enjoy the breathtaking view in any directions and leave only your footprints and/or tyres prints. Leave ample time if you plan to drive this awesome pass. Stop regularly and the camera should not stop filming/clicking. When we drove it, the road conditions where in a fairly good shape. Yes in some places the gradient is quite steep but could be negotiated in any normal saloon car. This could change if it rains or even snows. My suggestion is, enquire the condition before driving this magnificent pass.
Not for the faint-hearted! Absolutely stunning Drive through the Swartberg mountains...
Oh wow. If ur in the area drive on this pass, it is something to remember, absolutely spectacular views. The pass is gravel but any car can drive on a dry day. We drove an Opel astra & we were fine we just drove slowly. The 23 km took us 90 min with multiple stops. On the way down we passed a Golf GTI so if that can make it anything can make it.
An absolutely stunning part of South Africa with the most mind blowing scenery you have ever seen. It is located in the Western Cape. The pass is a gravel road built between 1883 and 1888 by Thomas Bain, son of the famous Andrew Geddes Bain who built Bain's Kloof Pass. The closest town is Prince Albert, which is located 25km North of the peak of the pass. Prince Albert is about an 11 hour drive from Johannesburg and about 4,5 hours from George. I would advise driving up the pass in an offroad vehicle - 4x4 or dirt bike. If you decide to cycle up and down, I recommend a mountain bike, the route is manageable on a gravel bike but the descent to Prince Albert is rough and technical. The pass has 2 sides. The first is the route from Prince Albert side. This side is rough and very rutted. Going up or down this side of the pass is tricky and technical. There are many switchbacks on this side of the route. The second side is from the Cango Caves. This side of the pass is breathtaking. The gravel road is great and pretty much smooth. There aren't too many switchbacks either.
At times it is hair raising, narrow road with no rails most of the time while you climbing the mountain from Prince Albert's side. Many places you or an upcoming vehicle has to reverse to allow one vehicle to pass before continuing However the beauty and majesty of the Swartberg mountains make up for it.
Fantastic view and perfect road for your SUV or Truck. With a normal car it’s a little bit difficult but possible! Have fun and enough of gas.
