Thoroughly enjoyed this unqiue cooking experience. The tour started with a visit to a local shop to learn about which spices are used and how. The remainder of the walking tour covers various points of interest in Bo Kaap and the history of the community. The cooking experience involved plenty of participation and they are great at explaining the different techniques required to create various dishes which make up the meal at the end. They were extremely friendly and welcoming, additionally they were extremely keen to answer any questions about the food and local area. We'd definitely recommend this experience and it was a firm favourite from our time in South Africa.
This tour/class was so much fun! Zayed, his sister, and his lovely mother, Zainie, were friendly and hospitable. We toured a local spice market, learned some facts of the history and present day Bo Kapp, and cooked a lot of food. It was a comfortable experience, as the family made me feel like a friend, a guest, as opposed to a paying customer. They are also very entertaining! They sent us home with a recipe booklet, a home-mixed bag of masala, and full bellies! Many thanks to the family for having me in your home and for sharing your history, neighborhood, and culture with me.
Highly recommend the Bo Kaap Cooking Tour. The ever so fun, welcoming hosts Zainie, Zayed and Zoelfaa heartwarming guidance through wonderful Malay spices, history, cooking skills and culture. Rolling our own Roti, filling and folding somoosas and more. A wonderful time was had by all !
Beyond expectation! We had a wonderful time experiencing a brief history of the Bo Kaap area and learning a lot about the cultures that has made it so interesting. Being invited into our guides home was such an honor. A lovely intimate cooking demonstration and then hands on practice made this the best 'food tour' we have ever done. Eating it all for lunch was the such a treat. We also came home with recipes we couldn't wait to try again. Book this! You'll love it.
One of our favourite experiences during our time in Cape Town. Zayed and his family are equally knowledgeable as they are charismatic and funny. We learned so much not only about Cape Malayan cuisine but also their history. Incredible experience. Don’t hesitate
We booked the walking tour and cooking experience and LOVED it! The walking tour was informative and not too strenuous. The cooking instruction was perfect with lots of hands on practice. The couple who hosted were funny, personable and engaging. We had a lot of fun and the finished meal was delicious! I highly recommend this class for anyone wanting a non touristy experience and enjoys cooking or wants to learn something new!
Incredible. Perfect. Great experience from the moment we booked until we walked out the door –– full of amazing food. The cultural walking tour was educational and fun, getting to see the local stores. The cooking instruction was loving and interactive. Such an intimate experience being in the home of a cooking legend. Can't say enough!
The tour began with a walking tour lead by Zainie Misbachs son whom took us around his neighborhood and into many staple stores and a spice shop. We then had a lovely class with Zainie Misbachs, making samosas, curry chicken, and other Cape Malay dishes. We even made our own Roti! We had a wonderful time and would suggest the class to any cooking expert or novice!
A cape town must do. History, culture and food lessons wrapped into one morning.
Highly recommend! Fantastic tour and food
