THE CRYPT Jazz Restaurant - where Jazz lives!

Description

THE CRYPT: Famous historic meeting place beneath St George's Cathedral where African and International jazz, cultures and cuisine fuse. The St George's Cathedral Crypt, built in 1898, is an important Cape Town landmark and museum. Now a jazz restaurant, The Crypt serves dinner and drinks in a setting that retains a sense of its history and charm.

Open for dinner and drinks Tuesday through Saturday
Music from 8pm to 11pm Tuesday through Saturdays

Cape Town is very proud of its jazz heritage and so at THE CRYPT we hope
• to present the best South African based jazz available in a relaxed atmosphere,
• to create a destination venue for new and established musicians to collaborate and captivate Cape Town’s community of Jazz lovers,
• to provide local and visiting musicians a place to hang, commune, and play together,
• to provide a platform for international music exchange – a great stop on the tour circuit for international musicians,
• to attract new audiences to Jazz by presenting great musicians in an intimate setting where Jazz can thrive and the guests become "family".

After 11 years of Jazz on Friday in Franschhoek with Derk Blaisse’s band Cape Dutch onnection, The Crypt Jazz Restaurant opened its
doors on the 19th of April 2013, to create a platform for Cape jazz musicians and Capetonians.

The Crypt is part of Desmond Tutu’s Memorial and Witness Centre which memorizes the famous march held in 1989, a few months before Mandela was released from prison. The march started at the Centre which in itself is part of St George’s Cathedral built by architect Herbert Baker and completed in 1890.

A jazz enthusiast, the Dean of St. George’s Cathedral - Michael Weeder - has a vision for the Cathedral as ‘the people’s church’.
The Crypt Jazz Restaurant forms part of this vision by reaching out to diverse communities through the universal language of music.

The interior of The Crypt Jazz Restaurant is designed by Charlotte
Daneel, founder of La Grange Art and Interiors in Franschhoek.

The white Baby Grand was manufactured in 1923, by Grotrian Steinweg of Germany whose history dates back to 1835 when the first factory producing superior quality pianos was built by Heinrich Steinweg, later known as Henry Steinway after his emigration to the US where he founded Steinway & Sons. Derk Blaisse acquired the piano in 1959 and paid for it by doing gigs while studying in Amsterdam.

The musicians of The Crypt are supported by CONCERTS SA, a joint venture of RIKSKONSERTENE of Norway and the SAMRO Foundation. With the highly appreciated backing of CONCERTS SA, The Crypt is able
to offer extra funding for the musicians.

The restaurant is run by manager Helene Groeneveld and chef Lenie Daniels who for more than 10 years were in charge of La Fromagerie at La Grange in Franschhoek, home of “Jazz on Friday”. The Crypt Jazz
Restaurant is supervised by Franschhoek master chef Matthew Gordon.

All the beef on this menu is from the Nguni cattle herd at Sneeuberg Nature Reserve in the Great Karoo, owned by Charlotte Daneel and
Derk Blaisse. The Reserve comprises 14 500 hectare and is situated in the Sneeuberg Mountains with an altitude from 1550 to 2000 meters. A fertile valley with famous Karoo grasses and herbs provides an abundance
of grazing for the Nguni herd, Eland, Zebra, Swart Wildebees and other antelope.

The beef is matured and hung for up to 20 days to enhance flavour and tenderness. (www.sneeubergnaturereserve.com)

The Big Five of South African Cheeses plays a special role at The Crypt. The National Cheese Festival was founded by Derk Blaisse in 2000
when 65 farmhouse cheesemakers from all over South Africa came to Franschhoek to present their hand made cheeses. The love for a good farmhouse cheese is inherent to The Crypt Jazz Restaurant.

What a beautiful venue. The music is amazing, we had a great band, with great sound and vibes. The food was good. No alcohol available, so bring your own. They charge quite a bit for bringing your own spirits not stated on the Web page The only down side to the crypt is that the service is horrendous! The waitress could not care less that we had to walk into the kitchen to ask for everything we needed. At least she collected our plates between smoke breaks. Sitting next to the bar to Facebook while we walk pass. No manager to answer to the bad service.
There is nothing like experience in the Crypt in person. It's not just the live music it's all about the local genius artists who play the music make you love this place even more.
The only recommendation I can give is to maybe get a bigger variety on the menu. Other than that the ambiance and music was stunning
Locally flavoured jazz in an amazing setting. 3 piece band an female singer on that evening. Cocktails and OK wine selection. Food not bad, we are everything...
Great service by the friendly and professional staff in a unique environment. The music was great and we thoroughly enjoyed listening and dancing to Afro Fiesta! The food we had Steak Frites and apple crumble was good, but not great. This is a place to visit for the music and atmosphere, not the food.
Lovely and different experience in a beautiful place. Unfortunately it took a while to be waited on, and when the food came some people only got theirs when others were finishing. Might be better to go as a small group :
Lovely vibe good food and stunning music. Perfect for a relaxing night!
Live Music was absolutely Incredible and an unforgettable experience and if it was based on that Solely I would be giving a 5 star rating !! However, their new management is not much to go buy!! 45min into waiting for our meal our waitress Who was amazing informed us that one of the dishes selected from there menu was unavailable so a new dish was selected off the menu 30min later when our food finally arrived we were informed the second dish was also unavailable leaving one member of our party to watch us eat dinner. When I bought this to the managers attention I was asked, "What must he do about it" not to ruin my evening any further I returned to my dinner Grilled rump steak that was served with a butter knife was tough and fatty the most tasty thing on my plate was the vegetables! I would recommend you eat prior not to be disappointed and double check your bill as I paid entry a month in advance and was recharged on my bill.
The music was lovely but they never told us we would have to pay R220 cover charge for it. We popped in for a quick coffee after a night out in town and only saw the R220 surcharge on the coffee for the first time when we got the bill. I do not mind paying cover charge but if so, would rather have planned a visit where we could have stayed longer and enjoy the music. We feel ripped off as we were there for 30 minutes. The service was also terribly slow. This venue is lovely and I really feel they can do better - or at least tell you "you are welcome for coffees but there is a R110 cover charge per person".
This restaurant is a bit of a hidden gem, situated underneath a cathedral the view is breathtaking. Historical facts are displayed on the way to the entrance and once you get it it is a very cozy restaurant with amazing live jazz bands to entertain you. Even the waiter sang when I was there. The food is also good and the service was prompt.
