Description

University House was Built in 1946 as a temporary structure to house returning servicemen following World War II, University House houses 112 men in six blocks from 1946 but sadly, G-Block, the building that housed the legendary pub "Opstaan" was removed and so UH houses 108 at the moment.

UH is situated off Rhodes Avenue and Matopo Road, Mowbray, opposite Mostert's Mill. Near Forest Hill and Varietas. It still and always will be the best residence at the University of Cape Town.

It's an all male residence. Just a walking distance from Upper Campus via the bridge: maximum of 15minutes. Students who stays here can either take the Forest Hill Jammie or walk. All the rooms here are single rooms and residents take their meals at the dining hall. Students from Varietas and Forest Hill G also take their meals from here. The rooms are not spacious and can be cold in winter. Bring a heater.
Best res at UCT, small numbers 100 odd , family style, respect and trust based. Top quality people, nice rooms, dining hall on property which is a big bonus. Hard to beat at UCT in my opinion...but I'm biased because it's my home away from home at the moment.
It's old and needs some renovations but the residence management is quite good. It's pretty close to campus and residents don't feel like prisoners as in other UCT residences, more especially female ones.
I spent two of my best years staying in UH! When I got the letter in matric saying I was placed in UH I was not impressed after seeing the photo that UCT provided. I almost didn't go to UCT just because of this. I am so glad that I didn't change. I ended up making some very close friends and now have memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life! Thanks to its small size you get to know everybody in the res and it feels like a family. Wouldn't change my experiences for anything!
Staying in UH is a privilege in disguise! Do not let the broken walls or the outdated infrastructure deceive you. The beauty of this majestic ancient habitat is the brotherhood that everyone living here comes to embrace. #WAWA "Only the Strong. Only the Brave."
One of UCT'S best residences it's history and uniqueness set it apart from all the others. It's more than just a place to stay
It's a University Mens Residence with only single rooms! My son loves it!
Single room, only men res. Close to campus and Main Road. Great.
Good facilities and strong sense of camaraderie. Definitely the most easy going res at UCT.
Nice enough as horse stables, pushing it as a prison camp, not fit for everyday use by humans.
