Yabonga empowers families infected and affected with HIV/AIDS.
Yabonga provides psychosocial support to families, i.e. adults, children and youth infected with or affected by HIV in 8 township communities in Cape Town.
Support centres at local health clinics raise awareness, offer counselling and information to come to terms with one HIV positive status and disclosure. Our programs offer holistic care with the emphasis on physical and mental health, including self-awareness.
Staff members are recruited from our clients and receive training in a range of qualifications in HIV care and counselling.
Our vision is to provide a sustainable model of holistic care and support to families and communities affected by HIV, enabling them to live independent, productive, healthy lives.
To achieve this we build effective partnerships with impoverished families and communities aimed at reducing the impact of HIV through psycho-social support, education and skills development.
More recently the focus of our work has shifted away from solely HIV related services to child and youth development. With a stronger emphasis on education, our Children's Programme provides after-school care to 1000 children and quality pre-school education to 100 children. The after-school care programme includes academic support, counseling and play therapy, as well as physical well-being.
Our holistic approach offers respite care for children suffering severe trauma, as well as warm meals with vegetables from our gardens and fresh bread from our bakery for all children in our care.
Our Youth Programme reaches 250 youth via 8 youth centres, the biggest of which is the Yabonga Youth Centre in Khayalitsha; 40 post matric students are registered with out GAP year programme, preparing them for tertiary studies or the work place.
