Asia Society Texas Center

About

Linking Texas to Asia for a shared future.

Story

Farsighted Houstonians led by former First Lady Barbara Bush and former Ambassador Roy M. Huffington established Asia Society Texas Center in 1979. Sharing the vision of John D. Rockefeller 3rd, who founded Asia Society in New York in 1956, they recognized the need to educate Americans about Asia and to forge closer ties between Houston and the peoples and institutions of Asia.

In 1995 the Texas Center’s Board of Directors voted to build a home for its programs and activities. The Board selected Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi, best-known in this country for his renovation and expansion of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, to design the building, located in Houston’s Museum District.

Completed in early fall 2011, the 40,000-square-foot Center features the 273-seat Brown Foundation Performing Arts Theater, Louisa Stude Sarofim Gallery, Edward Rudge Allen III Education Center, Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall, and more. It opened to the public April 14, 2012.

With the opening of the Center, Asia Society takes its place as a major educational and cultural institution in the region, the driving force in transforming Houston into an Asia-Pacific city.

Mission

With 12 locations throughout the world, Asia Society is the leading educational organization promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships among the peoples, leaders, and institutions of Asia and the United States. Asia Society Texas Center executes the global mission with a local focus, enriching and engaging the vast diversity of Houston through innovative, relevant programs in arts and culture, business and policy, education, and community outreach.

We went to the Asia Fest 2022 and totally enjoyed ourselves. It was perfect for families with children-lots of crafts and games, lion dancing and drums. They had food for purchase and a really good art exhibit about 4 people's immigration story. There were so many kinds of people there, which was very nice! I'd like to go back even without the festival.
Came here for the Asian night Market last week and it was so much fun. Lots of food vendors, both outdoor and indoor space. The sand storytelling artist was my favorite. The only negative were the lines to the food got crazy long after 7pm. I wish they could do the over a whole weekend like 2 days so that it could decompress the crowding and more people have opportunity to experience.

One of my favorite places in Houston. The exhibitions are always fascinating, the auditorium is beautiful and the programming insightful; even the café is enjoyable not always a given in museums!. Truly recommended for all Houstonians.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
We have always heard nothing but positive reviews about this place and passed by it several times in the past. Finally made a visit almost on a whim and could not have been happier with the impressive quality in both the magnificent architecture of the building and the excellence of the exhibits at the time of our visit, it was Wondrous World - Art & Islam through Time and Space. We highly recommend everyone to visit here. If for nothing else, sitting by and looking out at the fountain patio pictured upstairs alone is well worth the tranquil and mindful atmosphere this place so successfully represent.
If you want visit exhibits or host a field trip for your students then this is the place. They have a theater for shows they may hold and it’s a well designed building in comparison to to the others around it. Come out and check it out!
Great place to celebrate Asian culture. There are many family friendly events throughout the year. They just had their first in person festival after covid. They had performances and crafts for the kids. Everyone was safely masked.
