BHHS NJ Properties Montclair office represents Cathy Miller, a NJ realtor with whom I recently started renting a property from that she owns & also listed. (Side note; while it is legal for a realtor to take a commission on a rental they own, it is also widely viewed as highly unethical. This should have been the first ‘red flag’). Immediately following the signing of the lease, things started to go awry. It has been an offensive & atrocious experience, with so many issues that were clearly hidden during our brief walk through. I understand most apartments need work and most landlords do not want to spend money on repairs & maintenance, but it is the nature of the beast when you decide to become a landlord to which many responsibilities entail. When you have a dilapidated porch where the foundation is sagging and slanting & has been deemed unsafe for months to which the owner is aware, & someone walks on it (as their only means to get to/from their apartment), then falls through the wooden steps which are broken & rotting out, it is beyond unacceptable & dangerous; it’s deplorable. And that just scratches the surface at one of her properties in Glen Ridge (which she owns & rents). She currently cannot pass state inspection because of the array of issues that lie in this 3 family unit. The apartment I rented was also severely misrepresented and being a realtor, she should know better than to try & manipulate the conditions of her property while at the same time bending the truth on the neglect of it. It is egregious & I will never use her or this firm in the future since they allow such mistreatment of renters/ buyers & since they employee realtors of such low caliber. I would advise against others using her services as well. My rental experience has been an appalling lack of honesty, integrity & the degree of her un- professionalism is some of the worst I have ever encountered. The very few poorly & cheaply made repairs has led me to contact state inspectors, her own manager at BHHS as well as the health code department (among others). I only hope this helps un-suspecting renters or buyers avoid such an unpleasant situation. I think everyone has the right to know who they are getting involved with especially when it comes to your home & safety.
