My son and daughter enjoy Brooklyn Ballet. It’s hilarious that there are almost exclusively 5 star and 1 star reviews… I guess that says more about our time than Brooklyn Ballet. We just watched our kids be part of their gala, and while I have no expectation of them ever becoming ballerinas, I’m grateful for the opportunity this school provides to a very diverse group of students. I’m giving 5 stars - teachers are strict at times, because no child can learn ballet without that. If you expect learning to be entertaining and fun, I recommend a trip to Disney Land. You’re not going to learn much but you will be entertained. The two used to be seen as almost mutually exclusive when Neil Postman was still around.
..underwhelming. If you're looking for a nice studio - try Mark Morris. Don't really understand the structure of the place.. old barres. no changing space. no mirrors??..they use a reflective film that has holes in it LOL Aoi was a passionate, informative teacher. I took the Adult Fundamental class and if I didn't have experience - I would've been lost.
I was never a ballet fan until I started attending the shows at Brooklyn Ballet. They are funky, provocative, and tell a gorgeous story. And the dancers are just awe-inspiring. I actually organized an outing of CUNY faculty and students for one of their shows, and all concurred, Brooklyn Ballet's talent superseded anything they had seen previously. Also, the Tues. evening beginners class, taught by Richard Glover, was great fun. He helped to foster such a wonderful and inspiring sense of community that by the end of the class, we all felt like friends. I also have a colleague whose daughter has taken the children's classes at Brooklyn Ballet, and absolutely thrived. It is worth noting that all of my interactions with the Brooklyn Ballet staff have been exceptionally warm and friendly. In short, I highly recommend Brooklyn Ballet's shows and classes.
My 5 yr old daughter attended Brooklyn Ballet for 5 months. I had witnessed the staff being gruff and impudent to mothers with young children in the waiting room which was concerning. One day before class during this frigid winter my daughter fell outside the studio. When i brought her inside she was crying from the shock. Class was about to start and the director asked me and her to leave. I was 6 months pregnant and we had been taking classes for months. my 1st priority was to comfort my daughter so i tried to ignore her hoping she would just give up on asking us to leave she did not want the crying from the waiting room affecting the kids in class The director was so persistant and said there was a "back office" so i agreed to go. The "back office" was the hallway behind the school next to the DUMPSTERS!!!! i was 6 months pregnant and the stench made me nausous. The director was so eager to get rid of us that she actually picked up my daughters chair and carried her out. This was almost 6 months ago but this horrible experience has stayed with me. I k now they have a good reputation as a conservatory but I feel their lack of care and concern for their students is absolutely revolting.
I’ve been coming here for adult classes for about a year consistently and I’ve had the best experience. The instructors are attentive and create a great environment for beginners and those with prior experience alike!
Great experience in the Adult Begginers class - Yana is a great teacher!!! I took ballet for 5 years as a kid, and this was my first adult class. Exceeded my expectations for sure! I just went online and bought the 16 pack of classes $10 a class is great! There are some negative reviews on here, but they seem to just be a one time incident and doesn't reflect the current experience they provide. Cant wait to go back
Brooklyn Ballet may acquire a good reputation for their quality of services, however when it comes to professionalism, that is not the case. A dear friend who had three 1-hour classes last night was a victim of racial profiling alongside the attendees. The employees during the evening hours are unprofessional and prejudicial. These women of color paid their dues and wanted to enjoy themselves just as I’m certain as everyone else. Now, their experience is left with embarrassment, belittlement, and are victims of racial profiling. With that being said, I will not recommend this place of business.
A a colleague of mine experience such poor behavior from your establishment. After confirming time for three dance classes. She and the other patrons were told there was miscommunication and poor scheduling on behalf of the Brooklyn Ballet company. The class would only be 1 hour and if she wanted the additional hours she would have to pay way over there original price quoted. Restrooms were locked, the young ladies could not change their clothing, and were escorted out of a side door. This was done so the other patrons of the a production company wouldn't see these women. It is sad that you would judge a group of people because of the class they scheduled, and paid for in your studio. If you have discretions, and feel the need to be belittling of cultures, or style of dance, you should not have an establishment open to the community. This is not the first time the studio has treated people unruly. I Will not recommend your establishment to anyone.
My experience was an ultimate nightmare, I have arrive for my dance class a little early than it started l came into the building to keep warm before my class started and was told by security that I couldn't sit in the chairs because that was for the thearter production show whom wasnt even set up yet. As I get up and say ok I went outside to wait for my class to begin, once I began my class mid way thru we was stopped because the "music" and it was too many of "us" confused to what that ment also bathrooms were locked. As the class was ending there was security rushing us out the side door that I didnt knew exist. The ladies and myself was rushed out in the cold with shorts and tank tops also some with no shoes on because allowing us to exit properly from the front or change in the restroom was a problem since the production was going on was full of Caucasians. Insluted, angered, hurt and confused myself and alot of the women who are all African American was digusted and would never recommend this place or come to the establishment again.
Thursday class with David Hernandez is basic beginners with an emphasis on proper position, ballet terms, port de bras proper arms and finger and basic barre and open floor exercises. Saturday is also beginners class with Yana Volkova and is geared toward more technical aspects of footwork, combinations, jumps and turns. An excellent class to begin if you have some experience. Tuesday class with Richard Glover is for advanced beginners and the emphasis is on combinations, technical footwork, turns, and floor exercises combining jumps and turns. Sometimes there are guest teachers such as Maria Piedad, Wendy Clar, Nia Lancelin, and Jillian Greis which brings a little fun and diversity in terms of teaching styles. I have not tried the Neoclassical class on Wednesday yet because I'm a beginner, but I'll get here! The director Lynn Parkerson and all the staff is wonderful, fun and often participate in a class. A+++ for Brooklyn Ballet.
