About

Amazing and authentic Ethiopian food with ingredients coming straight from Ethiopia! We have one of the best ratings in the New Orleans. COME CHECK US OUT!

Story

Ethiopian cuisine characteristically consists of vegetables and often spicy and/or non spicy meat dishes. Ethiopian cuisine is traditionally eaten with your hands using something similar to bread called Injera (we do provide silverware upon request). Injera is the most vital component to Ethiopian cuisine. Injera is made from teff flour which is packed with calcium, protein, iron, and happens to be healthy and gluten free! Ethiopian cuisine would be most comparable to Indian cuisine. Ethiopian cuisine has been growing and receiving a lot of attention in the spot light within the last 5 years. Ethiopian cuisine has won a lot of awards and achievements (including this restaurant Café Abyssinia).

We are one of the highest rated restaurants in the city, check us out on yelp. Café Abyssinia has received many awards on our amazing food, been in the news paper numerous times, have been interviewed, received achievements, written about on blogs, and much more including being featured on TV! Come check us out, we are confident you will return.

Quality Ethiopian spot in the middle of Cajun country. CONS: Waitress seemed like she was either high or extremely carefree. Seemed like she didn't have a clue & needed prodding. PROS: Food was delightful. Portions were appropriate. Prices were adequate.
Had my first Ethiopian meal here, 1/29/22. The food was delicious, and came out quick. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I highly recommend dining here.
We were walking dow Magazine street and spotted this restaurant and walked in since we have never tried Ethiopian food. Our server was Ermias and she was very friendly and helpful in answering our questions. We were not that hungry and looked to share a dish and she suggested we try Doro Wat which is the national dish of Ethiopia. We got the Chicken Doro wat and it came with their bread and lentils . It was pretty good and glad we stopped by.
We were visiting New Orleans for the holiday weekend, and we were looking for something on the 4th of July. We saw this place was open and decided to try it out. They have a little outdoor seating and in doors. We got the chicken tibs. It came with a side of collard greens which was a surprise. The one dish ended up being $18. The flavor was pretty good. A little on the pricier side for the amount of food but definitely an enjoyable experience for a mom and pop restaurant!
Where do I start?! First, the Injera is AUTHENTIC and delicious. The portions are perfect, the presentation is unmatched...it's easy to see how they've been around so long! But the true hidden gem is the BAKLAVA!!!!!! Perfect after your meal or to go but you do not want to miss it!!! And the outside atmosphere is cozy and inviting, especially all lit up at night. Perfect for a group BYOB nosh...TOP NOTCH!!!
First time visit and will be back! Sambusa was the best I’ve had in the US. . The food was top notch. Could have provided more injera bread, but I didn't ask. Had veggie combo and chicken wot. Service was prompt, restaurant was clean, food was excellent for price.
SO GOOD. Super authentic and delicious Ethiopian food. 100% hitting this place up again the next time I'm in New Orleans. My partner and I both loved it. Also, pricing was super reasonable! It was the least expensive dinner we had in our few days in New Orleans and easily our favorite one too. Fantastic value for money. All around I highly recommend this place!
Food and service was wonderful. Our food came out in a timely manner. I like we were served the appetizer first then after it was finished our entrée was served.
I drive to NOLA just to have this experience. Best cuisine in their category. I love everything I have tried. When I'm feeling down I come here and my spirits are immediately lifted. This food is cooked with so much love clearlyFood: 5/5
I will start with a disclaimer: Cafe Abyssinia is not an experience for everyone. However, if you have been looking to explore new horizons in cuisine, this is a great place to expand with. I have yet to be disappointed by any of the meals. Personally, Lamb Alicha and Wat are my favorite, but Gored Gored and all the other options are great! I highly encourage this place, the service is good and the food is great. It may not look like much on the outside, but it's a great dining experience!
