Many years ago I had my first wheel cake in Taiwan and really liked this lightly sweetened pastry with red bean filling. You can find small stands selling them on busy street corners and it is often the fresh baking aromas drawing your attention to them. Forward to last year when I discovered Catmint on street fairs here in NYC - I have to say these are the best wheel cakes I have had. It's the quality ingredients and passion that makes me crave for them. Bubble tea never got me excited as I care about the tea and most often you get good tea elsewhere but with Catmint NYC has a real gem. They have a variety of different flavors/fillings to choose from. Hard to pick a favorite! And a very nice selection of teas to go with the cakes.
Tried 4 different flavors in 2 Combo Two. Every wheel cake was in perfect size and moderate portion of the fillings. The taste was okay but not very impressive. Hope they can develop one more savory option. Matcha Red Bean - The rice cake was not mentioned in the ingredients but inside the cake was a plus. But it’s malting hence not very chewy any more. It lost the balance between the sweet from red bean and bitter from matcha due to insufficient matcha in the shell. It can be improved. Custard n Bubble - hmm, actually I didn’t try it. Not a big fun of tapioca anyway. Banana Chocolate - More chocolate than banana. Good for cocoa lover. Tuna Corn n Cheese - The only savory option now. Its very easy to miss the corn. Very lite savory wheel cake.
YUM! We’ve never been able to locate these guys until finally they opened this place in East Village! The addition of VANILLA BEAN in the custard flavor is a great twist to the traditional Taiwanese cream custard and was our favorite! We’ll be back to try the rest of the menu!
Soft airy cake with filling of choice: vanilla custard, custard with boba, matcha with red bean, matcha with chocolate and so on. The cake is freshly made so be prepared to wait for 10 minutes. The shop is cute and cozy. The food quality is very consistent. For less than 4 dollars the cake is a delight in the neighborhood.
A cute little dessert shop serving Asian-style cakes in a selection of flavors. The cakes seem to be good for dessert, of course, but would make a decent breakfast as well, I thought.
This was absolutely delicious. Fresh off the griddle, the matcha cake was warm, buttery, and moist, while the chocolate filling was light yet still quite tasty. I'm definitely coming back time and time again.
They make those cakes so delicately. Always fascinating watching them make one. Very good! Not too sweet. Love the place.
Best Taiwanese Wheel cake in New York. Handmade custard inside crsipy thin waffle . They have butter cream custard and Matcha chocolate custard and Taro. If you are not sweet lover, you can try corn & tuna! I have little wish and hope owner can see it. Could I have shreds radish wheel cake?!
I followed my friends here to grab a snack. It's tiny but cute inside. Clientele is mainly NYU students. Everything was a solid okay, like what you expect from a lukewarm handshake. My matcha wheel cake contained a good amount of red bean but I didn't really taste matcha. My Earl grey tea was a little bland but this actually helped to counter the sweetness of the cake. The service was somewhat cold. Don't think I will return, but good luck to this place. Businesses have high turnover here.
Unique desserts in a city full of sweet treats! Recommend the vanilla custard and matcha red bean wheel cakes. All orders are made on the spot and served warm. Biting in, you can tell that they are made with real, quality ingredients--LOVED that the fillings were creamy and decadent but the outside cake retains its crisp fluffiness; the matcha red bean even had a mochi surprise inside. Owners are friendly and space was clean & bright!
