Everyone is very polite and friendly. Prices are reasonable. The inside is very modern and beautiful. Definitely not a salon for me though. I know there are other black women with type 4 hair who have no problem here but this wasn't the case for me. I got a wash and style/transformation. First off the chair they wash hair in was quite uncomfortable on my head and neck. After 20+ minutes in that position, it was harsh on the back of my head. My stylist was very kind however she said the foam gel would dry clear in my hair and it definitely did not. I was left with many clumps of whiteness and when I spray my hair to fluff it up there's many white beads which she said would not happen. Other people who leave with what I had done had hair looking soft, shiny, and bouncy while still defined. My hair was left crunchy, sticky, and dull. The gel flakes a lot too, I almost thought it was dandruff. And my hair wasn't parted straight either. I fixed it somewhat once i left but thats definitely a first. Personally I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with type 4 hair but maybe you'll have a better experience than I did.
My stylist was Tatyana and she was lovely! I was nervous that my hair would be cut too short, or that my curls wouldn’t hold but since I never knew how to style it 2b-2c, but it turned out nice! Definitely knew what she was talking about, and did a great job showing me how I can style my hair to accentuate my curls, products I should be using, and some general knowledge about how the products or techniques work. The only down side is how extremely expensive this salon is, as are many curly hair salons in the city.
My daughter is Filipina and Puerto Rican. Her hair's texture changed when she hit puberty. I tried to educate myself by reading whatever information I can find on the internet and watching videos on how to care for my daughter's hair. I had no luck. I took my daughter here because she no longer wanted to blow out, hot comb and flat iron her hair. She wanted to go Au Naturale and embrace her curls. Porchia was very patient with my daughter and educated me on how to properly wash her hair, what products can/can't work and how to style it. It was definitely worth the trip! We're coming back again in 3 months to slowly get rid of the damage caused from straightening her hair. My son was so impressed with his sister's hair that he asked if he can make an appointment along with her so he can get his curls defined.
Thank you Nick and Maria for such an exceptional cut, superior care, excellent communication, and extremely informative tips on how to care for my hair. From the moment I stepped out of the salon, compliments came my way I, of course, pointed them right to the location & personnel! I have finally found my go-to stylist when in NYC, which we women know, is hard to find! P.s. photos do no justice.
I had an awesome experience at DevaChan. My haircut with Melanie was exactly what I wanted and needed. She was attentive, friendly and very professional. I absolutely luv my hair cut. Dasha, the assistant not sure of the correct spelling shampoo, condition and styling of my hair. The same attributes can be said for her. It was the most relaxing time I have ever spent at a shampoo bowl, not to mention, laying on a lounge chair totally added to the experience. Everyone was so friendly. I flew to NY from my island home to get my hair cut at Devachan with Melanie. From entering the salon to leaving, it was an awesome time. I wish I would have taken pics.
If you have curly hair and you haven’t gotten a Deva cut, get one! It has made such a difference in my hair. The stylists cut your hair dry and pay attention to how your hair curls naturally. They also just tell you how to use products to best enhance your natural curl. I had been using products incorrectly and the information they gave me was so helpful I don’t use their products, they are expensive, but the products I use are much more effective now. I had gotten so fed up with bad, expensive haircuts that I was just getting my haircut at Supercuts until I tried a DevaChan cut through Salon Apprentice. It is absolutely worth the cost, and fortunately with my curls I don’t have to get it cut that often. The cut does take a while because they dry your hair under a beehive dryer but they do it so they can see what it looks like post-cut with the curls dried but not blown out at all and then they make adjustments if necessary. It’s a really excellent and well thought-out system.
My haircut and curls looked amazing. Not a five star because I waited 45 minutes. No one addressed me about it. I had to address the front desk. They were unaware, which made me a bit upset but only because I was starving. My appt was at 11am, with the commute, I had no time to grab anything to eat.
I was very excited to get my curly hair cut at the original Deva/curly hair cut salon but unfortunately it was underwhelming. My stylist seemed like he was trying to rush through my hair cut and didn’t actually ask what I was looking for, resulting in my hair being about 2 inches shorter than I wanted. When it was time to wash my hair, he just put me at a wash station and walked away, not even introducing me to the lady who washed and styled my hair. If you live in the NYC/NJ area, go to Jersey Curl. Much better experience for half the price.
I absolutely love my new curl cut. I came in with very bad heat damaged hair, my curls were so fried and I have type 3b and 3c. Melanie cut my hair and walked me through everything and now I absolutely love my hair. She was super friendly and took her time with my crazy hair. I felt so self conscious about myself until today. I would definitely recommend her.
I had a haircut with Tatyana and she did a wonderful job. Everyone in the salon was nice from start to finish. She asked me what I wanted, asked me about my routine, gave me tons of great advice, and did a great job with my hair. She was quick but I didn’t feel rushed. Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning. I have 3A thick curly hair that I struggle with constantly and it was no problem at all for Tatyana
