Eastern State Penitentiary

About

Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks & guard towers.

Story

Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts.

Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber “Slick Willie” Sutton and Al Capone.

Eastern State Penitentiary is open every day, 10 am to 5 pm. Admission includes "The Voices of Eastern State" Audio Tours, guided tours, Hands-On History interactive experiences, and a critically acclaimed series of artist installations. For more information, visit http://www.easternstate.org/home

One of the top museums I have visited. The self-guided tour, the guide-led tour and hands-on history tours are very well done. All of the staff and volunteers are *very* knowledgeable and friendly. The information you learn about the American penal system is fascinating and is an important part of history. A must-see.

Visited with a group and the audio tour was very informative and interesting. There was also the option of additional audio so your tour could be as long as you wanted. The staff were also very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. It was a very cold day and inside the prison is just as cold as outside so wrap up warm if its cold out! Overall great few hours and definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

I've always heard about the "State Penn", but wasn't fully aware of the history. I also saw it on "Ghost Adventures" once. It was one of the stops on our hop-on-hop-off bus tour. I had to convince my friends to take the tour with me, as they were hesitant thinking it was "scary". This was definitely not the case! It was very informative and fascinating to take the tour through the Eastern State Penitentiary. One adult ticket was $14, and we were each given an mp3 player and headset. The audio guide was narrated by the actor Steve Buscemi, so that added a nice touch. The whole tour took us about 45 minutes, mostly because we were admiring the different parts of the site. It is self-paced, so that made it easier to absorb the information and views. They allowed us to take pictures, I don't recall there being any areas that did not allow photography. Definitely dress comfortably, as there is a lot of walking required. I don't want to give away too much information provided during the tour, so I'll stop here!

When I know of anyone going to Philadelphia I always recommend this a place to visit. The self guided audio tour is very informative. This is a fascinating piece of history.

First off, it was very cold today but we all enjoyed this attraction! The audio tour was informative and at a comfortable pace while being very informative as well. My boys enjoyed sneaking a peak in all of the cells and this place maintained their interest throughout. The history lesson is amazing and I thought it was great that one particular guard later became an inmate! There is plenty to do here but we made it through most of the tour in a little under an hour. If the weather was warmer, it would have been great to hang out in the open areas more. Please make this an addition to your list of you are in the area!
