Medium sized yet compact grocery store featuring hot, ready made food, a bakery, and interesting fresh produce. The tea selection is large, and I enjoyed checking out the specialty produce that they had, including lemonade lemons and giant brussel sprouts.
There is also a coffee bean bar with a variety of beans and a grinder thats free to use. They also carry a line of zero calorie coffee creamers in a large variety of flavors as well as a lot of refrigerated salad dressings

A superb market, I say.
Fairway was right down the street from where I stayed for the weekend on business, and I came to grow fond of it, eventually visiting multiple times over my trip. First, I was pleased to discover a fine selection of organic produce and the like, plus a good supplement section, and anything else I needed. Second, there was actually space and elbow room, as to be relatively relaxed and comfortable (unlike the maniac atmosphere of a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, that is). Also: friendly service, and no problems. A recipe for success, indeed.
Much thanks to all the folks at this market, for providing for me during my travels. Keep up the good work :D

Because it's near where I work, I've been stopping by this Fairway on the way home from work since it opened. Sure, it's great to have a Fairway in the area, but unfortunately, even the great Fairway, like most other supermarkets in NYC (except for Trader Joe's) hires some of the worst employees.
I won't wax poetic about Fairway's products, since they're great, diverse, and generally reasonably priced. This review is all about the lack of customer service and professionalism among the staff.
Too many times I've had to wait at the coffee or fish counter, with no one around to ask for help. The employees, as they move around the store, whether they be walking or stocking items, expect you to get out of their way and can't be bothered to say things like excuse me or thanks. Then there are the employees, typically male, who hang out around the fish counter/checkout line/break room just chatting and playing with their phones.
When you finally do go to pay, you get shouted at to join a certain line, but when you get there, the transaction with the previous customer hasn't even ended. The cashiers seem to not be aware that they're at work, and can hardly greet you, if at all.
I also had a strange encounter with the security guy at the front door. I went into this location once to do some shopping, and then when I saw the line, decided it wasn't worth it. Instead of walking through all the people between me and the exit, I thought I'd stay out of the way and head back out through the way I entered. When I tried to leave, the guy verbally and then physically tried to stop me. I gave up and walked all the way back to the exit and left through the maze of people on the other side of the store. My next time in the store, I saw the same guy let a woman leave through the entrance without saying anything.
The customer service in other Fairways is much better, even if they occasionally do have rats in their olives.
Fairway should start to care about who they hire. A company can only be as good as the people its made up of.

Again this particular Fairway in Chelsey I found quite mediocre compared to the main one in Red Hook. The Cheese department is OK but not striking with variety and flair. The fish section is so unexciting. I visited that place twice after work on different days, the fresh seafood department was dead. Nobody's buying anything there.
