Very cool hidden civil war bunker hidden in one of Rock Creek Park’s many trails. Escape the urban jungle for an hour and feel like you’ve escaped into the middle of the untamed wilderness by venturing into this hidden fort. Don’t forget to climb up to the summit and enjoy the natural canopy and bench that transports you to what union soldiers felt when defending the fort over a century and a half ago. Bonus points if you’re in a small group or by yourself.
Love the history and significance of this place, but an imagination and vision is required to picture what was once here. Honestly not much to see besides a very shallow hole in the ground.
It's not an actual fort but if you want to get some exercise and see a historic marker then go for it. Nice little trail to walk and the trees provide some shade. Very peaceful when I went and only encountered 1 family.
Nice walking trail / park in DC, Fort DeRussy has some history as part of the defenses of the national capital during the American Civil War. Trails / walking paths are pretty well designated. Maps at the location are pretty straight forward.
Fort De Russy requires a bit of imagination. You can walk onto the earth works and parapet and imagine the large guns firing and the Confederate Soldiers trying to make their way up the hill in the Battle of Fort Stephens on July 11 and 12 1864. Fort De Russy was one of several forts in that area of DC built to protect the city. It was a forest that was deforested as most of the trees were systematically chopped down to make it difficult for any advancing Confederate soldiers.
Nice, easy hike but the fort is literally a hole in a hill. There are better sites around but the trail itself is quite pleasant and not overly crowded.
If you are an avid Civil War buff and live in the area, stop by Fort DeRussy. If you are not Civil War obsessed, you'll be very disappointed. Fort DeRussy is an old Civil War defense fort in Rock Creek Park......150+ years ago. Today it's literally a tourist sign and a rock with a plaque on it. It's NOT worth the trip.
The fort walls are still visible and can be walked on. Everything is overgrown but it does not detract from the atmosphere.
Closed off to "preserve" it. It's a dirt hill in a ring and if going inside it to experience it erodes it after a few decades, that's better than no one ever experiencing it, which is what you have now.
Fort De Russy, is a beautiful and historical place. At fort de russy theirs so much to do.
