It is a small slice of nature that fools you into thinking you've left the city. A rustic trail with the trailhead at Melvin C Hazen Park. We decided to hit this trail by using public transport. We got off at the Cleveland metro station on the red line of the D.C. metro. From there we headed north. The trail is 1 mile out and back trail with several small waterfalls and makes three easy stream crossings on stones and fallen trees. I would imagine this stream will be overflooded during periods of higher water levels and one might certainly need waterproof hiking shoes. But, we were lucky since it was a winter hike for us! It is a well-marked trail and is considered an easy trail. I personally will not call it a hike since it’s too small of a distance. It is pretty walk and you get some quiet and green away from the city with no effort and easy access. It is also known for bird nesting and bird watching.
Great place to walk your dogs and/or take a short stroll through woods. There is a bird nesting area in the park making it ideal for bird watching or listening to their sounds. The park does not have a playground or any grills. There is a small field with two picnic tables which I rarely see in use. In the woods, there is a trail that meanders along a creek that joins Rock Creek about a mile from the beginning of the Melvin C Hazen trail. Note: the trail begins on the corner of Reno and Tilden and stops at a small parking lot then picks up again on the other side of Connecticut Ave. Most of the trail is on the second leg, post Connecticut Ave.
Melvin Hazen trail is a great easy-moderate hiking trail. On it, you will traverse multiple stream crossings, and experience minor inclines and declines along the winding trail. This trail can be completed in approximately 20 minutes, and finishes in Rock Creek Park by the East-West trail and Pierce Mill. Wildlife is not abundant, but you will be able to see many varieties of insects and a few snakes. All are relatively harmless.
This is a lovely little trail, and I do mean little. Nestled between Reno Road and Connecticut Avenue, it's probably only about one mile in length, if that. But it is just enough to get a little exercise and get away from the city. As it is lesser-known, it is quieter than more popular trails like Billy Goat Trail.
Beautiful trail and many birds.
This is a great place to have a nice short walk in the woods, right in the middle of Cleveland Park! There are many huge trees, and a very nice creek running down at the bottom. On a sunny day, it's really a delightful walk.
Love this place. One of my organization's focus restoration sites. Beautiful oases in DC.
Cool open area to play sports but that's about it.
Only complaint is its too short! Mostly narrow, single file tail. Sights and sounds of the city melt away heading east from Connecticut Avenue to Rock Creek. Best to do on dry days. Beware several rock- hopping steam crossings.
The narrow and muddled trail descends into the depths of this small park located in the middle of the city. There is quite a bit of brush and trees, and this is definitely the less-traveled park in comparisons to the neighboring Glover Archbold Park. The isolation can be quite eerie, but then you run into a few people walking their dogs and you're reminded everything is O.K. Good trail to add to your run. #LetsGuide
