Due to the recent closure of Taste Place on Lincoln Way in Ames, there has been a shift of Chinese students to eating at Grandpa Noodle Gallery on 16th Street. I had the chance to visit this recommendation during my recent trip to Ames, and I ended up visiting a second time during the same short trip because the food was that good. In a nutshell, there are 2 sides to the menu, and I recommend everything on the left side of the menu. The right side of the menu has a bunch of a la carte dishes, which are okay, but nothing great. I was told that the recent improvement of the menu came about as the restaurant got a new chef. The service was friendly and prompt and the price is reasonable. There doesn't seem to be any issue with waiting for a seat as there are plenty of seating for parties of all sizes.
Food was awesome. Excited to return and try more menu items. I went for lunch and had the lunch special. The special came with a choice of egg drop or hot and sour soup and two large crab rangoons. Crab rangoons were great probably the best rangoons I've ever had, hot and sour soup was also very good. My business partner had the homemade noodles with tomato sauce which was very tasty. Food all tasted very fresh and cooked with love. Will be back soon!
I thought it was pretty good. I had the Steak Chow Mein, it was a little heavy with the black pepper, but pretty good. Noodles coated with oil helps you to feel full even after bike ride home , currently no wifi, or bike rack... lots a space, not cramped like a lot of restaurants, friendly staff even after they saw me taking pictures haha... outdoor seating available on north and south sides... you get menu from front desk, and seat yourself, when you're ready to order, you return to front desk with you order, and get plastic number, the waitstaff brings you your food...
It was a little empty when we went but I had been meaning to try this place. It’s still new so it made sense that it was empty. Food was soooooooo good. And well plated. I did a create your own bowl. Service was fast also. I would definitely recommend
Nice place. We were there for lunch. Atmosphere is very cafeteria-like and modern, very clean and open and bright. Wait staff did not write down our order, which made me nervous, but everything was just right. Though I overheard a wrong order received at a different table. Food took a long time - staff informed us that a piece of equipment in he kitchen had broken and was causing delays. We were in no hurry, but it could have been a problem for someone on a short lunch break. We did the "build-your-own" both for the price $10 and out of self-defense. The menu has lots of pictures and the names and prices of dishes but no descriptions of ingredients. Food was very tasty and a lot of it. Note: I took the photos after we had eaten some, so bowls were fuller at the start. Would eat there again, but really think they ought to make their menus more descriptive.
I would give more stars is I can! The food is awesome, our waiter was awesome Robin, and very informative and kept us entertained the entire time. I would highly recommend this place and make sure to ask for Robin!
The noodles themselves were fantastic. I got the Sesame Noodle option, believing that a signature dish would give me the best experience. However the service was terrible, including our server stopping to watch TV and not taking drink orders until we we're ready to order our meal. The food had cold vegetables, lukewarm meat, and the sauce wasn't well mixed in. For such good noodles, everything else just sorely lacked.
This is real authentic Chinese food. My wife is from Chengdu and I lived there for one year. We ordered the Chongqing and Shanxi noodles and they were better than anything I've had in China. The food here is absolutely delicious and I highly recommend it if you're looking for real authentic Chinese food.
I was just beyond blown away yes it made me wanna just cry into my soup it was so good!! One of best experiences I've ever had in my 29 years of dining out!! The food was impeccable and our waitress Ms Cecilia was probably one of the best waitresses in Ames hands down do not overlook this gem!!
Food was phenomenal, really good genuine Chinese food. Server was great, she was super helpful and kind to us when we visited. The egg and tomato dish was fantastic, the stir fry eggplant and potato was super good. They even had hot water if you asked for it! Really great food and not expensive by any means. Will return here in the near future for sure
