Visited in April, roads were closed to Wheeler's peak. Day was too warm to leave the dogs in the vehicle, to tour the caves. So settled for visiting the visitor's center and learning. I have added this to my bucket list

Great introduction to Great Basin National Park. Staff friendly and helpful in planning what to do and where to go. 2 good movies for further understanding of the park.

Typical of modern National Park Visitor Centers, very heavy on "fragile", "cultural", and "impact". Not that they're is anything wrong with that, but very light on geology-which is, largely, what makes it a National Park. Having said that, well worth a visit, especially if you are not science oriented.

Great park, great employees & not too crowded. You have to see Lehman cave but be sure to make reservations ahead during the summer. During the winter you can often have the whole tour to yourself.

There was a 5,000 year old bristle cone pine that was cut down in 1964. It may have been the oldest living organism on earth. They have preserved a section of the tree and I submitted a picture of it.
Great Basin National Park is a very unknown park. It is in the desert of Nevada near Ely, NV. The park itself has a magnificent cave that is very worth visiting. On the mountains there are beautiful forests, lakes, glacier and a grove of bristle cone pine trees. All of these are within fairly easy walking at the end of the road on Wheeler Mountain.
We enjoyed our 2 day visit to this park.
