Grünauer

About

Classic Austrian Cuisine in the heart of the crossroads.

Story

Nicholas and Peter Grünauer, along with long-time friend and Viennese restauranteur Klaus Piber, have collaborated in order to open a namesake Viennese Gasthaus in the historic Freight House. The restaurant is the second iteration of the family's popular and long-lived restaurant of the same name in Vienna’s artsy Neubau neighborhood, and they hope to bring much of the same inspired Austrian cooking, hospitality and atmosphere to downtown Kansas City.

"Authentic Central European cuisine with a broad selection of unique wines, beers, and spirits."

Just got here in KC and Grünauer was our first place to visit and grab lunch. It definitely exceeded our expectations. We had six people in our party and had no problems getting seated. Atmosphere was super cool being that it looked like a refurbished building. The service was outstanding. Mario was our waiter and explained everything on the menu and offered perfect suggestions to our party. If your looking for exceptionally good German food this is a must have.
Fantastic service, amazing food. It was wonderful to try, first time here. Restaurant week is fun.Comfortable seating. Made our reservation with ease.. Top notch service, what a true dinner experience should be. We were blessed to taste some amazing food, that make your tastebuds jump for joy. Desert was amazing. Nice selection of drinks. Recommend trying, won't be disappointed.
We enjoyed our date night here. The service was very good. Megan was our server and she was a delight. The food was very good and reasonably priced. We had nonalcoholic beverages and I definitely recommend looking at that list. The dessert was incredible. We also had soup it was delicious. I’m not even attempting to put the names of these items in this description because they’re very difficult to spell.
There is handicapped accessible parking as well as other parking available in the back. Very easy to access inside, no steps etc. Just keep your receipt to waive the $20 parking fee. The food here is Amazing!!! I was in European food heaven!! Bread basket was fresh, the bread warm and the crunch of the crust so satisfying. The potatoes were melt in your mouth spectacular and make sure to get a side of spatzle! Mm delicious! The schnitzel was tender. The desserts were just enough without being overly sweet. The sorbet very refreshing after all the rich food. You won't go away hungry here. The staff was very attentive and the atmosphere is an experience in itself, very intimate and relaxed. The wooden beans and brickwork from the old freight warehouse really add to the European feel. The prices - not necessarily a place where you would bring a bunch of kiddos to eat, but a nice getaway for intimate adult meals, where you can relax and chat. There are ways to make it more budget friendly if you don't get any extras, as the entrees themselves are moderate in price. Vegetarian options: Had two vegetarian entrees or some possibilities in the appetizer section to combine and make a meal. Parking: Lots of parking space behind the building, just keep receipt to waive parking fee. Makes it nice so you don't have to park along the street. Wheelchair accessibility: Handicapped accessible
Had the pork belly appetizer, farmers plate entree and cheese strudel. Every step was delicious. Garrett was my server and he was knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful in guiding my dining experience. It was pricy by many peoples' standards, but worth the price in my opinion. I'll definitely return and bring others to enjoy. Vegetarian options: Garrett pointed out a few vegetarian items that sounded good, but I opted for the carnivore option.
We went to Grünauer on a Saturday night for dinner. Got there about 30 mins early but were able to grab a drink at the bar. Service was excellent with great recommendations if you’re not familiar. The Saturday night special was delicious. If you’re there with a group, try to order different entrees because there will be plenty to share.
It was so much fun starting with their delicious warm bread, cheese spread and butter. My brother got their take home 1 liter stein. I had the cod dinner came with some very tasty potatoes. The service was excellent
The service was exceptional. The pork belly app is delicious. My friend had the burger and I had trout. Everything was great but the house made bread, is house made bread! Can't wait to go back Features: The host did not have a mask but the waitstaff did.
Fabulous German fare. Good luck pronouncing most of their menu items, but it's just that genuine. Rustic atmosphere supports business dinners or a romantic date night. Their Bauernschmaus is amazing smoked pork loin and grilled pork belly. The red cabbage is slightly sweet, perfectly spiced, and tender. You'll love it if you don't like red cabbage. You will ask for seconds of you like the cabbage . Outstanding service.
We chose Grünauer while heading somewhere else, that detour was the right choice! Sitting at the bar was also a good decision because we absolutely enjoyed our host & bartender Andrew. The food, beer & wine were authentically Austrian/German, the same family recipes they use at the family restaurant in Vienna are replicated here! It was Wednesday & early but quickly packed, so I recommend reservations. When you need a break from BBQ check out this Austrian/German gem & sit at the bar. See you next year Andrew!
