My wife and I took our daughter and her of partner to see Hadestown for her birthday. The Walter Kerr Theater was a perfect venue for the show. The show was AMAZING! The story, the music, the vocals, the acting, the dancing, and the theatrics were stunning. One of our best Broadway experiences to date!
I recently 5/15/24 hosted two out-of-towners and wanted to take them to a Broadway show. Hadestown was the pick, and I couldn’t have made a better choice. Phillip Boykin as Hades was amazing. His voice is perfect for the role and he was so entertaining to watch. Ani DiFranco as his wife Persephone, was perfect. They played off each other beautifully. Actually, everyone was great and performed flawlessly. If you’re not familiar with Greek mythology, refer to the Playbill, as there is a short description of the characters there. Give it a quick read before the curtain. If you don’t you might be a little confused during the first act. Any night at a Broadway show is magical for those of us we love the arts, and Hadestown is a prime example of that magic. It’s a Broadway experience at its best. If you haven’t seen it then just go. Seats: Orchestra front row center. E-111-113 excellent.
This is a show you'll want to see again & again! I've watched Hadestown in the Walter Kerr Theatre twice; once in December 2023 and in February 2024. Both times were just incredible. You are greeted by charismatic staff who do their job in hyping up the crowd. A man asked the guests in the line if it was their first visit, and most people said no! The reason why it was my second time was because my friend was in town and wanted to see the show for a FIFTH time! The stage production exudes a New Orleans vibe that people with southern roots may appreciate. The music was also jazzy and upbeat, despite it being inspired by a Greek tragedy. The show itself had me laughing, gasping, and close to tears. On my first watch, a lady beside me had cried so loudly that the whole row turned their heads at her. It's a show that is best to watch completely blind to immerse yourself in the story. But let's say you already know how it ends like I did, you'll still get a kick out of the star power on stage giving it their all to entertain the crowd. I was grateful to have my first watch include famous actor, Jordan Fisher, as Orpheus. He proved his talent, along with his scene partner, the beautiful Solea Pfeiffer who played Eurydice. Don't even get me started on Betty Who, who played my favorite character- Persephone. Hades did hold his own though, thanks to the talented Phillip Boykin, who should really do more voice work on radio or video games- his deep pitch is iconic. I also want to give my thanks to the background characters, who added extra flair to the stage with their diversity. The fates were fantastic, and Hermes? That lady is a star in her own right! I cannot complain about anything with this show, but the seats were very uncomfortable due to how cramped they were. Both visits, I felt squeezed in a box and relying on my friends to lean on to not disturb the other person beside me. For reference, I'm a 5'8 tall woman and one of my friends is considered overweight, and both of us were struggling to be comfortable. On the bright side, there doesn't seem to be a bad spot to get a good view of the stage. I definitely think my first time had the best seats where a friend got us in front center orchestra, and the second time I bought seats in the orchestra rear right Row N, Seats 20-22. The photo attached is my view from those seats. There are bathrooms upstairs, leading to the mezzanine. So, if you'd prefer to be close to them you're best choice would be to sit in the rear left orchestra/front left mezzanine Women and the rear right orchestra/front right mezzanine Men. You'll like this show if you're a fan of Greek tragedy, love stories, and musicals. If that doesn't appeal to you, then you'll still enjoy the catchy music, set design, and audience reactions to the twists & turns the story follows. This is a performance that shouldn't be leaving Times Square anytime soon, because it is magnificently told, and I'll probably end up watching it again & again.
Hadestown is a great show! But if you want to enjoy it, do not purchase seats 4 or 6 in the box. The theater might say it's a partial view, but no view is more accurate see the attached photo.
Great music, but pathetic 4 of 5 stars listed on the website aren't in the show. More we substituted than listed on the little print. It's shameful and pathetic. Thursday night. Hundreds of $$ for tickets. Bait and switch. All performers were talented, but it wasn't mind blowing. I've seen the show in the past and it was better. Solea Pfieffer was excellent.
As a longtime fan of Ani Difranco, I anticipated an enjoyable, fun, and professional production. This play far exceeded that expectation and had me hooked for the entire runtime. Ani Difranco's singing was, of course, wonderful, and she had no trouble holding her own when it came to the dancing and acting as well. It was if she had been doing broadway shows for years. Very impressive. Putting that aside, Hadestown's other performers, and the play as a whole, will have you forgetting that your attendance was motivated by a love for Ani Difranco and her music. And, to be clear, this in no way detracts from Ani's perfomance. There were numerous parts where the emotion of the story, and, at times, just the singing alone had me tearing up... I couldn't help it and I don't even remember all the exact parts that struck emotional chords... It was just something that happened throughout the play. Jordan Fisher Orpheus was on another level. One of the best singers I ever heard. Isa & Jon Jon Briones both perfomed beyond peak level with their acting and superb singing. Also, Max Kumangai, who played Hades understudy replacement on 05/17/2024, was so fantastic. He provided Hades with this very regal demeanor that made you admire him even as you didn't.
Fantastic show. Music is exquisite. Diverse cast. Incredibly moving lighting, which is a weird thing to say, but if you watch it you will agree. This is a new bright Broadway show that I was happy to see.
Such an incredible show. The music is really fun and well done. The sets are intricate and the ensemble of the show does a wonderful job of pulling it all together. I would definitely recommend, and if you do go, give the soundtrack a listen beforehand- it’s great!
We saw this play when it first came out, standing room only. It was great then, and it is still a well-done and acted play. There were some substitutions, particularly two key actors. The role of Hermes was masterfully played by Malcolm Armwood, a superb performance. Armwood rocked that role. The role of Persephone was well played by Brit West. West did a great job. Tough shoes to fill, but she brought her own flavor to the roll. She is immensely talented, but the original actress to play Persephone Amber Gray in 2019 was way more intense with a voice that saturated your soul with words commanding your attention every time she hit the stage. Orpheus, played by Reeve Carney, continues to be phenomenal. How can an actor be this fantastic in the same role after all these years in a word is, unbelievable. His movements, intensity, and seemingly fresh portrayal of the roll are worthy of some award. I first saw him in the Netflix series Penny Dreadful. He was awesome in that, too. We were pleasantly surprised to see him put together a stellar performance in 2019, and nothing has changed in 2023. This play is still rocking on with a real message that resonates even today. Go see this play and support the arts.
Good not great. Went to the matinee The music and choreography made this performance. The performances of orpheus and eurydice were underwhelming. They just don't have stage presence. And Orpheus sounds like a little girl. He can hit the notes but isn't captivating at all. The band is phenomenal, as are the 3 ladies that play the Fates. There is one young lady in the chorus with great stage presence. The rest of the cast are good..
