During my nearly 8 years in Portland I brought my 2 cats to a few different vets. Hawthorne Vet was the last one - no need for me to search anymore. Both my cats were patients at Hawthorne for more than 7 years and I don't think there is a better vet in Portland. Dr. Wagner's holistic approach to pet care is exactly what I wanted for my girls and what they needed. In addition, she was kind, patient, and extremely helpful when I decided to move abroad with my cats. She worked directly with the appropriate people and organizations USDA to ensure I had all the paperwork needed for my cats to enter a foreign country with no issues. My only complaint: I couldn't bring Dr. Wagner with me to my new home country!!
I've gone to many vets in and around Portland for many pets over the last 20 years and I've been consistently impressed with Dr. Wagner and her team at Hawthorne Vet over the last few months. They are very attentive, responsive, and communicative and have helped us learn to manage our kitty Rowan's asthma. We had already taken him to our primary vet and a specialist many times and paid thousands of $$ with no noticeable improvement. Dr. Wagner figured out an approach that combined traditional and holistic medicine and he's responding well. I also really appreciate their commitment to inclusivity here. I would highly recommend this practice.
Dr. Wagner and her staff are awesome. I got the impression from the moment I walked in that they genuinely cared about my pet. Dr. Wagner is incredibly knowledgeable and gentle. I had a few bad experiences with some other vets so its nice to have found a place I can trust. I recommend this veterinary clinic to anyone.
For 17 years, our beloved Michaelangelo got only the BEST holistic care from Dr. Wagner and Nurse Carolyn. Whether it was fleas or sneezing, dental work, blood tests or stitches--the team at Hawthorne Vet Clinic were always knowledgeable and compassionate. We loved our pupchild and H.V.C. helped us keep him in the best of health; then, when the time was right, they helped us say goodbye. For all their kindness we cannot thank them enough.
Hawthorne Veterinary Clinic has been my primary veterinary clinic for 14 years. My first furry companion received excellent care from Dr. Hamann throughout his declining years. Her knowledge, treatment and care allowed him to have less pain during his last years without dosing him with pharmaceuticals. She has been the primary care with Obie. He's had a few surgeries ie. neutering and teeth cleaning and has always recovered quickly. His yearly check ups are thorough. Most recently Dr. Wagner treated Obie when he needed to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Her care, treatment and knowledge is also top notch. I've read a few reviews here. Let me address the cost first: The cost is comparable to other clinics. The front office staff many years ago was less than great. The 'new' receptionist is friendly, easy to work with and doesn't ignore you.
I've been taking my elderly dog here for years now and I couldn't be happier. All of the staff has been nothing but friendly to me and my dog. These veterinarians take their time getting to know you and your pet to ensure your needs are meet. They offer a good balance of Eastern and Western medicine. They do surgeries at their facility, offer acupuncture, and home visits.
I've been a client of theirs for twenty years now. The doctors are thorough and caring. The staff is professional and have always offered a gentle hand with my dogs. It's been a great place to keep my pets healthy and happy.
Not a nice experience. My puppy and I went in for a very expensive intro consult that I was told was an hour, but was a 25 minute wait and 20 minute consult. My dog is going to be my service animal. The vet told me my breed have bad temperaments and are neurotic, and prone to seizures. I was shocked and said surely it's case by case and down to training and breeding too, and she said well sorry if it upsets you but it's the truth and the only reason my puppy has a good temperament is because he's so young that his real temperament isn't showing yet. I understand about informing owners about health care risks, to empower them in caring appropriately for their pets. But this had no such intent behind it, as it was totally disempowering. I felt belitted, judged and highly uncomfortable. I left crying as all my confidence in our training and my care felt undermined. This is the first time since owning pets through my entire life that a vet has not been kind. I will not be returning.
I came in to purchase something and stood staring at the reception in the back room10 ft away as she typed something. She failed to acknowledge that I was waiting. When I asked to pay she said she would help me when she was done typing? I have considered bringing my cats here. But I can never get passed the snotty front desk. It is a great idea for natural pet care but you have to pay a "consult" fee just to introduce your pet. Something around $150.00. Their customer service is the classic Portland customer service model of which is based on being rude and pretentious. Customer service means that you value customers and your main purpose is to be friendly! No customers, no job!
Hi. I just moved one block from this clinic. I went in to see about getting my cat a pedi. The receptionist coldly said "We're holistic. You'll need to pay $160 and have us observe you and your cat". My kitty hates the car after flying here from India but off we went to his first vet on Alberta and 18th. He gets excellent care there. Nice welcome to the neighborhood.
