Iowa City VA Health Care System

Father-in-law has been getting care here for decades. Recently, he was here for treatments and was diagnosed with lymphoma and given 3 months. That was 2 weeks ago. Family visited him on Sat. 4/14 on floor 7W as he was in hospice. The staff in 7W are absolutely wonderful. They attended to all needs compassionately(from housekeeping to Dr's). They communicated on a level that we understood, not technical and cold; or down to us, but in a way we were equals. We can never show enough appreciation for what they did for him. Richard Burton passed around 9 a.m. today Mon. 4/17, and the staff handled notification professionally.

I received a kidney transplant here. The VA gave me the best care. I will ALWAYS be grateful.

I was here a week ago,I was asked to to see A SPECIALIST, I TOOK THE VA SHUTTLE FROM DES MOINES, WE HAD 8 VETERANS AND THE DRIVER,THE TRIP TOOK 2HOURS UP AND 2HOURS BACK 2HOURS AT VAMC, SAW THE SPECIALIST AND NURSE, I HAD NO PROBLEM PAPERWORK UP TO DATE, THE DOCTORS AND NURSES HERE ARE GREAT, THE PHARMACY WAS HELPFUL

The VA in Iowa City is an excellent facility that treats the veterans with a great deal of respect. My experiences at the facility are very good.

Parking used to be a problem but not anymore! Driving 126 miles round trip for a 15 minute test is not fun though. Traffic on the road leading to the turn off to HWY 6 is unbelievably congested all the time! Good and bad care can be had at this hospital. The food offerings in the cafeteria is worse than an Army mess hall. This VA hospital has a good partnership with the Iowa Medical and other surrounding Hospitals but I've only seen ONE world renowned Doctor here in my twenty years of receiving care here. It has been my experience most physicians and surgeons who are 'loaned to the VA hospital are either Residents or Med Students (probably in their last years of med school).But remember my fellow Vets, your care is up to you in this system. You really need to be the center of defining what you need from the VA system, and don't let define it for you.
