J Wong's Thai & Chinese Bistro

About

Fresh and sophisticated Thai and Chinese cuisine in a stylish, contemporary setting.

Story

Located in Salt Lake City's historic Patrick Lofts building and just steps away from the Salt Palace, J. Wong's offers downtown diners fresh and sophisticated Thai and Chinese cuisine in a stylish, contemporary setting. The menu honors the Wong family's Thai and Chinese roots, featuring traditional favorites and modern interpretations. Open Monday-Saturday for lunch, and every day for dinner.

J Wong’s Thai and Chinese Bistro opened at the end of 2009 in the Patrick Dry Goods building located at 163 West 200 South in Downtown Salt Lake City. The Wong family, namely the four brothers (Jason, Josh, Jordan, and Jesse) had grown up in and around the restaurant business and wanted to open a spot of their own where they could share some of their heritage. Having their mom from Thailand, visiting many different places in Thailand, and growing up eating delicious Thai food; added to a list of Thai cuisine they wanted to share with everyone. Then theres the Chinese side. Their dad having come from China, and already owning and cooking in several Chinese restaurants, gave the Wongs a list of Chinese cuisine that would also be a central part of the menu. When J Wong’s Thai & Chinese Bistro was created, it wasn’t limited to just one style of food. The brothers decided to have the option of both, and created a Utah restaurant that could offer both Thai food and Chinese food.

J Wong’s doesn’t want to limit anyone from eating our food. When creating the menu many staples were removed in order to be the perfect size, but this caused a pain in the back of our mind because we knew we could execute those ever so popular Thai and Chinese dishes that had been left off. We also knew that some dishes just wouldn’t do well for take out that had been included on our dine in menu, so we decided to create a dedicated menu to takeout & delivery. This is where we could include staple dishes like Beef & Broccoli or Sweet & Sour Pork. This also gave the opportunity for those that don’t dine in at J Wong’s to eat our great food. That way J Wong’s has an offering for everyone, whether it be our Thai food specialties or Chinese classics.

Delivery was something that was a keystone for J Wong’s even before it existed. We knew that a Salt Lake City food delivery service would provide people around downtown an opportunity to eat if they didn’t have a way or the time to come over to the restaurant. Delivery was a medium to offer a great meal, be it Thai food, Chinese food, or a mix. People that are just visiting Salt Lake City, or that live up in the Avenues, or that just happen to be in proximity to downtown could now get great Thai and Chinese via delivery strait to their door or office. Delivering great Thai & Chinese food has become a large part of J Wong’s. When J Wong’s was established there wasn’t any Thai food delivery service in Salt Lake City. There wasn’t a Chinese food delivery service in Downtown Salt Lake City either. This was why making a carryout and delivery service a priority for J Wong’s.

I walked by this place about twice a day but never seem to be too busy. A friend told me their food was good and i tried it out tonight. I ordered the lettuce wraps which came with an abundance of sauteed chicken and vegetables. But only 4 lettuce leaves had to get more lettuce. I also ordered the Mongolian beef which came with white rice. The beef cut was flank steak which they cut into thick sliced. Sauteed with their sauce and scallions. This was very good too. I am glad i came here for dinner!
Delicious food! Quality was high and there was attention to detail, something that is always admirable in Thai food and service. Definitely recommend the Pad Thai - the fresh crushed peanuts, lime, and green onion was authentic Thai, and medium spice was just enough to raise the temperature but not burn. Personally, I could definitely handle more spice and would order spicier next time recommended if one is used to eating spicy. The portions were generous and reasonable prices for the amount. Wish I had room to try more of their dishes. Atmosphere: felt upscale but warm, balanced with a sense of modernity that made it welcoming and relaxing. Service was attentive and kind from all members on staff, with just enough table touches and nice attention to details. Vegetarian options: The dish could be ordered with tofu. Wheelchair accessibility: Easy street access, wide doors, tables at front to serve accessible needs.
Beautiful, authentic and formal environment! Delicious food at reasonable prices! The Thai soups and foods were the best by far! Especially the pad Thai, panang curry, and Thom Gai soup. It felt very clean and modern. They even had robot servers that passed by frequently bringing out orders! Good customer service! Only thing is the parking was a challenge on a weekend Night, and it would be VERY helpful if they had pictures on the menu. ***If you liked my review or found it to be helpful give it a thumbs up. thanks!
Delicious food. I ordered the Thai basil with chicken, and it was so delicious. The medium spice level was just enough kick to be tasty but not overwhelmingly hot. It reminded me so much of my favorite dish from my favorite Thai restaurant back home! The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend this restaurant, despite the tricky parking.
They were super busy when we went in. Great friendly staff. They got cool little robots to carry food to your table. Attentive staff. We forgot something on the table and one member ran outside to catch us and returned our item. Well done! Good food
Really cool place. Super, super friendly staff. Delicious, flavorful food. Really loved the little robots that brought some food around, and the aesthetic is wonderful.
I've gotten takeout here for years, and finally actually went into the restaurant for once. This place is a solid choice for Chinese/Thai American food. But I'm really excited for the end of the pandemic, so they can bring back their separate Chinese and Thai authentic menus. The Peking duck was sooo good.
Food was pretty good and the atmosphere was chill. Robots deliver your food and servers can help serve you otherwise
Food is good and at a good price for the portion. Green curry and lettuce wraps were very tasty. .Nice atmosphere. Service was good despite a bit of a language barrier with the Turkish bartender. I was really put off that they wouldn't let me sample a glass of wine to see if I liked it without any explanation...so I just ordered water.
Excellent food downtown Salt Lake City, very close to the temple square. Great variety of choices. The staff was friendly and the ambience of the restaurant classy. Recommended!
