I've been buying bread from here since I was a child. It's a very old establishment. This is as original as it gets. The family that runs this bakery is very funny and kind. They speak fluent English too. Be sure to buy their sponge cakes. It comes in 3 sizes: regular, mini and bite-sized. You can't find sponge cakes more airy anywhere else.
A few years ago I was on way back from a grocery run to Chinatown when I dipped into this hole in the wall bakery for a quick coffee and pastry, has since become my Chinatown bakery of choice. The palmiers aka elephant ears, wife cakes and almond cookies are some of the best I've had! Please be aware that Chinese culture is stoic which can come off as rudeness to those not accustomed or aware of it, so please do not expect to receive the "Starbucks smile and service" Thank you.
This small, no nonsense Chinese bakery has a limited selection which they make exceptionally well. The items are old school Cantonese style buns, pastries, and cookies. The prices are cheaper than other places in the area. Stand-outs are the egg tarts, old lady lo por cakes, and almond cookies. The buns are just okay. If you are lucky you can get some fresh out of the oven goodies.
One of my favorite businesses in Chinatown. It is a no frills old school bakery. None of the signs are in English, which I like, because I usually point to different things and it's a surprise when I get home. I have yet to eat a dessert that I didn't like. Been coming here for years. Hope they survive the pandemic. A gem of place.
This is a hole in the wall bakery that my mom used to go to all the time when she lived here. I totally forgot about this place until I walked by it one day and had a flashback. It was late in the day so there was no line and half the items were already gone. My mom's favorite item is the sponge cake aka paper cake. My favorite place is Kam Hing for sponge cake, but this place is a tad less moist. It's still very good and twice as big for $1. I regret not getting more. I will definitely come here more often. It is a hit or a miss with service. People tend to be friendlier when it's not crazy busy. I also tried the coconut tart. If you like the texture of shredded coconut, you will like this. I'm not a huge fan of coconut so it's just ok to me. The tart itself it more like a shortbread then flaky.
Okay so this place has the best milk tea. It's strong and absolutely perfect. I've gone to several other places in the area but there's something special about the milk tea here! I've even tried recreating it but, while still delicious, it's just not the same. I always make it a point to visit here for the milk tea and I get whatever is in the case sorry I don't know the names! and they've always been good.
Very small bakery and not much left in the afternoon but the walnut cookies we got were very good
I love this place. The mini sponge cake is only $0.40 each. It is light and airy. A delight to eat. They have other good Chinese pastries too. It's a hole in the wall that offers cheap and tasty treats.
Classic, old school Chinese bakery. It's looks dirty and janky but it offers some of the cheapest freshly baked goods around the neighborhood. Staffed by two ladies that doesn't speak English, but can understand a few basic English words. FYI, don't queue up on line expecting them to acknowledge you, this establishment employs the old school Chinese method of "calling out" your order. If you don't, others may "skip" you. As an ABC, this Method of getting my grub is a bit hard to employ, but the moment they make eye contact with you don't hesitate just call out your order. The ladies behind the counter will not acknowledge your order but they are preparing it for you. They offer very simple and classic baked goods, don't expect anything fancy. Their teas/coffee either come in small 8oz or large 12oz. When I need a quick breakfast, I come here! Large freshly brewed coffee and large sponge cake comes out to be $1.75 in 2016! Their famed sponge cake is so moist, and it has a lovely eggy taste.
It brings back so many memories when I think about this bakery, especially since it’s one of the oldest bakeries standing in Chinatown. I grew up eating their sponge cakes and warm egg tarts as a child. I would constantly tell my grandfather to get them for me since it’s right below where he lived. This bakery is truly a mom and pop’s shop, since I’ve grown up to know the owners and their son. What fascinates me about this place is that their selection in bread and pastries are very limited, but by the end of each day, all their baked goods are gone. Yes, they are that good! You can hardly resist not going to this place, because the aroma from the baked goods warmly invites you to the store, and you can’t help but end up leaving the store with a bagful of deliciously baked goods. This is truly a unique place that everyone needs to try once in their lifetime.
