We were visiting from out of town and happened to catch the Maritime Museum on their annual "Community Day" when they offered free admission and discounted boat tours. What a delightful afternoon! The museum is very well done with interesting exhibits about various aspects of ship building, lobster catching, and light house keeping. Many areas of the museum have informative videos which offer the benefits of a guided tour without the time constraints. The boat tour gave a nice opportunity to see a couple smaller light houses as well the BIW ship harbor. Overall, I'd recommend it as an excellent educational family destination.

Always a fun place to go. This year we arrived before the out buildings were open for the season. Still, lots to see and do in the museum. The ship models and paintings are incredible. The curator and staff has spent some time on the exhibits and it shows. Excellent descriptive plaques within exhibits. Very well maintained, and clean. Went with our kids and they had fun too. Bonus... You get to see what Beth Iron Works had going on. And a great view of the river in all seasons. Very much worth the trip.

One of my favourite museums! I love nautical history and the collection at this museum is lots of fun. A beautiful location wonderfully juxtaposed the Bath Iron Works, it was a pleasure to roam. The sculpture of the Wyoming was a great centerpiece, and seeing the antique small craft was also very interesting. One of the best touches in my opinion was the way the original buildings were handled (at least in the off season). Using background sounds that represent the work being done was a very good way of immersing us in the subject matter. I first thought the admission price was high, but for a two day ticket for such a well done museum I'd pay that price all day long.

Hyperlocal history is the best kind. It provides insight into the existence of an area, and is more likely to reflect on your life. The Maine Maritime Museum is an excellent example of this. Many of the buildings are original. The lobstering exhibit is well done and enlightens outsiders to the local industry. The one drawback: it's a bit expensive.
