Right next to Mississippi Records, there is a small store called "Mississippi Home Stereo" that is owned and managed by Eric or is his name Aaron? I don't know. It's filled with, of course, home stereo equipment - receivers, amplifiers, speakers of all shapes and sizes, record players, a few radios, and parts/components. Just about anything you can think of. The prices may seem a little on the high side, but that said this is a small, local business running on sales income - and I fully support that. And unlike eBay or online marketplaces for buying used audio equipment, you have the privilege of testing the equipment or asking Eric to do it for you and making sure it works - and works properly. When it comes to buying items, you usually pay cash I don't think he takes credit or debit cards... haven't tried, but if it's an easy sell or returning something you bought from here, you can get away with exchanging a piece of equipment and pay less for the gear you want. As for repairs, you might as well hobble over to Jamac Audio for speakers unless it's a simple fix, or if it's a record player. Eric's repair team is short-staffed and so he has way too many projects going on right now. You might be able to get a job opportunity there if you're handy with servicing audio gear. As for selling, I haven't sold many pieces of gear, only speakers. So I can't really say anything about record players or receivers/amps. That said, Eric is interested in decent speakers - ideally with real wood veneer or walnut, not vinyl, if it needs work. If it doesn't need work, I'm sure he'll take most any speakers. Just don't expect to get much cash for it.
Diverse and surprising selection of artists local and global at very fair prices. Lucked out and found some rare gems on a recent visit. Friendly and knowledgeable staff make it a fun experience. Check them out and support a local business, you will definitely find something for you!
Perhaps the best record shop in Portland. Always finding a gem or two to take home. Staff are always so welcoming not a Portland attitude in my experience, and didn't the owner Eric find the rarest Velvet Underground acetate in NYC? Not to mention their record label releases wonderful stuff. Too much to mention..but look it up. Plus Toody Cole used to have a pop-up shop in their basement. How cool is that!?
Great selection especially if you like R&B and jazz! I found a few Duane Eddy records for $3 each! They also have a giveaway box outside where I found a perfect condition classical album. I will be returning soon!
Great selection of genres, especially their international genre!!found this shop to be very helpful!!Eric is an amazing cat who knows his music. They don't charge as high as most record shops do. If you are ever in the northern Portland area and looking for world music, this would definitely be the first place to check out first. Thanks Eric
YEP! This record store is one of the best in the Pacific Northwest! Oh yes, also noteworthy that their prices are beyond fair!
I bought a couple of used but in nearly-mint condition records for what I considered a very reasonable price. They carried a lot of jazz and reggae vinyl, and they have a listening station so you can listen to records before you buy them. I think this is one of the better record stores in Portland.
Friendly record shop in a pretty, quiet part of town. Well-curated and reasonably priced, focused on rock, punk, and soul. It feels a lot like going to a Portland record store 15+ years ago. I noticed many customers comfortably using the listening station which was cool! It would never cross my mind to use a listening station, so I’m glad this shop has created an atmosphere where that’s normalized. A delightful stop on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Decent selection, though not enough Sun Ra records. Also, the person at the register seemed more interested in attending to their dogs than helping me find the record I was looking for.
Great neighborhood bricks and mortar record shop. A vinyl hunter's oasis with $1 and $2 bins for digging plus a wide array of new and used albums in all genres. Very strong used and new international music, folk, and blues sections. Great used and new avantgarde section modern classical synthesizer and electronic component composition fans take note! Eclectic "New Arrivals" bin always worth a deep look. Go on over right now. Buy something to aid the shop and help support its own record label. Your Post-generosity Grooves Guaranteed!
