Great walk seeing the amazing river relief mural, but the museum is closed. The place is open but seems like an abandoned location from a 60s scifi film. Manage your expectations & make sure you pay for parking, they’re kinda hard-core for a deserted place.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
We did not know that Mud Island Bridge was closed down. It was a total disappointment. We saw other people there like us, who were also trying to figure out that it was "temporarily" closed. This place has NO bathrooms. Elevator to the top still works but there is nothing opened, no employees, NOTHING except the buildings themselves, the display on the ground long walk but super interesting! and the view of the Mississippi river. The bridge was still opened to pedestrians although we did not walk it so it might not be..? The view from the top was a lovely treat. Parts of the rooftops are caving in. Be prepared to explore at your own risk.
This museum is well worth stopping for, we spent about 3 hours in here. The exhibits start from the Prehistoric age and run through the rivers glory years to the Civil War, to modern times. They have a Rivier model outside showing where the river starts and how it has it tributaries and where it dumps into the Gulf of Mexico. The only problem is the exterior of the building, it does seem a bit run down. We went before Memorial Day so the gift shop was closed and the cafe was being renovated, they do have an elevator for the disabled, HCA restrooms and water fountains. We were told that the other shops were scheduled to open a few weeks after we went there so hopefully others can enjoy this place also.
First looks can be deceiving from the parking lot it looks pretty worn down, but this is a really cool place. Beautiful view of the Mississippi river. Great museum its pretty large, could spend a few hours looking/reading. They have a miniature scale mississippi river in which kids were playing. It was really hot 101 so being able to come in and out of the air condition was good, and we cooled off with some ice cream from the cafe. All the staff we encountered were very friendly. If you enjoy history, and beautiful sights I recommend visiting.
Underrated area of Memphis. Beautiful museum that has a great summary of knowledge for anyone visiting from out-of-town that wants to brush up on the history of the area. Access to it via the tram or overhead walkway offers some great views. The massive model they have of the Mississippi River is also great to see.
This seems like an interesting place back when it was new. Everything was old and/or broken. We thought we might be mugged or murdered going into the park.
Very neat and filled with lots of information. Definitely a must see when in Memphis! It's also linked up with Mudd island which is also neat.
Great place to bring the kids for a small day trip. Inside the museum there are many exhibits on life on the river, from early settlers to the birth of the blues and rock and roll. Or kids especially love the full scale steamboat and civil war battle ship exhibit. Outside the museum, and free to visit, is a model of the complete Mississippi River system, with running water that you can wade in.
This museum seems innocuous, and the initial room seems somewhat dry, but it gets so much better! Walk-through replicas of steam and armoured boats and interactive displays really bring the history of the area to life. Shame the cafe and shop are closed during 'off' season, but still well worth a visit
This was an unexpected treat! The scaled models of the various river basins and primarily the Mississippi River were truly amazing. The placards along the the way were full of interesting stories and timelines about the river's history. I hope this place is revitalized.....surprisingly, it was a ghost town on a pretty Saturday afternoon. This is a hidden gem. Pet friendly.
