This little museum is well worth a visit. This home was part of the underground railroad. It is such an important part of our nation's history. We really enjoyed learning some of the details about how people escaped slavery. It is horrible how these people were treated. Fortunately, there were people who were willing to step up and help.
Absolutely loved this Museum!! So many historical artifacts. I experienced a surreal feeling just being on these hallowed grounds where our ancestors bound for freedom once stood. I highly recommend this experience to all!!Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
I ENJOYED every moment of this tour. The history of this place is phenomenal. I stood where our ancestors stood anticipating freedom. I truly hate this is not advertised more. I really pray more African Americans experience this.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$11–15
Had the opportunity to learn a lot of hidden history. Learned how this became an underground railroad. Learned how slaves sing songs in code. Learned about quilt coding and much more. It should be mandatory that every school in the united states visit and learn the story of history so it can help prevent repeat.
Took the tour. Partly self-guided with some recordings.visit includes stairs down to the actual basement where formerly enslaved people were held. Not very well curated
This is a must-see if you visit or even if you live in Memphis. They provided black history that we were never taught in school. The tour guide was fabulous!Visited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedYesPrice for adult entry$11–15
I arrived at 1 but they were filled for the day. But the guide was pleasant. She offered us some brochures to take should we ever come back to visit. She never came back though with the brochures. We did take pics outside.
We are so glad we stopped here while in Memphis. This was a combination live and recorded audio tour that walked all through the slave trade starting in West Africa all the way to life in the US and eventually the underground railroad. Such a comprehensive and well done tour. And both tour guides were absolutely amazing in sharing their deep knowledge of a very hard topic.
Wow, wow, wow! This is a must see, touch and feel. This experience is very thorough and insightful. You can not take pictures or video. Its a lot to take in, so be ready. My kids are young teens and were so appreciative of this moment. They were engaged and excited to hear what the history books didn't teach us.
A very interesting place to visit with a cool old historical home which was once part of the underground railroad. As previously stated, the ground work for a great museum is here but the execution is off here at the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum. My experience- I got lucky and happened to show up right before 3, which was the next tour time. I was unaware that there were specific time slots for the tours People were gathered outside in the backyard waiting and after a few min a woman came out and announced they were ready for the next group, but that the credit card machine was out of order due to a recent storm in the area. Coincidence??? seems many others were denied the chance to use a credit/debit card also When it was our turn at the counter to pay the woman was speaking very fast, and charged us for something that I was not sure about- Maybe the 3 masks she handed me and required us to wear?? Anyway, the total was more than expected and she was very off putting. Then we were directed to go down the hall and wait in a room. Many people were confused on where to go,due to the woman's scrambled directions. Then when everyone was checked in the tour began.A man who was much more pleasant than the previous woman crammed us all in the hallway of this small house and turned on a recording played on a blue tooth speaker. Each wall of the hallway had a bunch of picture frames with various historical artifacts hanging up, and the speaker on the recording was discussing them. The man would direct our attention with a pointer and interject every once in a while. Not very effective when there are about 20 people in the group. You get no chance to look at or read anything on your own. Then we went in another room to learn about some different underground railroad facts. I found this part very interesting. We visited a bedroom, and also the kitchen before going to the cellar to visit the area the slaves were hidden in. All in all, an ok experience, but could have been better organized and presented differently.
