The Art Moderne styled Art Theatre first opened at 36 east 8th Street in 1930, starting out as a late-run showcase for American and foreign movies, but became a first-run theater in the late 1950’s.
The Art Theatre was later became the Movieland. In the mid-90s architects Davis Brody Bond was hired to renovate the building for multi-purpose use by NYU and added the facade.
