In 1872 Plymouth Church gave rise to an important chapter in music history by championing the Fisk Jubilee Singers credited with the early popularization of the Negro spiritual tradition.
Since 1847, Plymouth Church has been a vital presence in New York City, and in 1961, our Sanctuary was designated a National Historic Landmark. Aware of our unique history and influence, Plymouth continues to serve our community with regular worship services; programs for children including Sunday School, Plymouth Church School (preschool), Plymouth Day Camp, and other programs of the Ministry to Families and Children; Music programs for all ages; Christian Spiritual Development classes and special events; and Outreach programs for those in need.
At Plymouth Church, Our Mission is:
to KNOW GOD by placing Jesus Christ at the center of our lives through worshipping God, studying God’s Word, and responding to God’s call; to GROW TOGETHER in community by learning together, serving together, and caring for each other; to LIVE OUT OUR FAITH boldly and generously by pursuing God’s shalom in the world.
In 2005, Plymouth Church celebrated the 150th anniversary of The Plymouth Collection, considered by many to be the book that set the standard for modern hymnals.
