Preservation Hall
"The story of Preservation Hall dates back to the 1950s at Associated Artists, a small art gallery at 726 St. Peter Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Upon opening the gallery, owner Larry Borenstein found it curtailed his ability to attend the few remaining local jazz concerts. He began inviting these musicians to perform “rehearsal sessions” in the gallery itself – sessions which featured living legends of New Orleans jazz, including George Lewis, Punch Miller, Sweet Emma Barrett, Billie and De De Pierce, and the Humphrey brothers. Since 1961, under the leadership of Allan and Sandra Jaffe, Preservation Hall has hosted nightly jazz performances seven days a week, sent touring bands around the world and recorded dozens of records."

Had the best solo Saturday evening by attending the 7:30 p.m. show. The venue is full of ambiance, love of music, and soul. I love that the Hall supports musicians and also educates future musicians with their foundation. House was packed - so many standing… but I highly recommend purchasing front row if you can. This way you can enjoy a personal experience with the musicians - like you’re in their living room while they play together. The overall experience is about sight and sound but there are these other sensory bits that go with - the smell, the temperature, the textures of it all that add to a one of a kind experience you shouldn’t miss. I will be back for more! Can’t wait!
Great band and amazing history. The sound is good inside and the trumpet player sang without a microphone. At a few points the horns get enough volume that you may want some ear protection if sensitive. Make sure to buy your tickets in advance as it sells out almost every show. I would say the place holds about 80 people maximum. The seated option is on a bench and standing room only is on the side or the very back. Get in line early if you want to get a side spot or seated near the front. I was in back row on the right and the trombone player was blocked most of the time with the large post in the middle of the room.
Memorable musical experience in New orleans! The atmosphere is relaxed and entertaining. Around 40 minutes, the band plays 5-6songs. I lost track of time. But, this place was really small and too hot in summer which made me exhausted a bit.
Loved it. Definitely recommend the seats vs standing. It was warm in there and the standing crowd didn’t look overly comfortable. Music was great, exactly what I was hoping it would be. Only thing that would have made it better would be an encore at the end.
Wow. This whole experience blew my mind. I didn't know what to expect, but knew I had to see a proper jazz band at least once during our stay. The show is short, the room is small. Masks required. The weather was cool, the music was HOT. What a show. My love of New Orleans jazz is cemented. I need to come back without the kids so I can just listen to music all day and night.
Just an incredible jazz venue. Tickets sell out quick. Just get them, did standing, come early and get right behind the benches. Just a great intimate venue, not a bad seat, 45 min personal jam session. Band will take photos afterwards. Just incredible. It's an institution, make sure to stop by
If you’re not careful, you’ll walk right past Preservation Hall and that would be the worst thing you do in New Orleans. Tickets sell out quickly so don’t expect front row seats the day of a show. However, I almost enjoyed standing more so you could dance a little as the band played. They do not allow any photography or videography while the band is playing and it’s truly cool experience! There is no food or drink service so make sure to have plans afterward. I highly highly recommend grabbing a ticket to see a show here even if you aren’t a jazz fan…this just might change your mind
If you come to New Orleans then Preservation Hall is a must!!!! This establishment and what they represent is a cornerstone in the foundation of American culture. By attending a show, not only can have an enjoyable evening and a unforgettable experience, but you also are perpetuating New Orleans jazz and preserving culture. The staff is amazingly friendly and helpful. Things to know or consider before attending: face masks are required and required to be worn correctly. This is for the safety of the artists and community. Vaccine cards are also required. The building is a historic site and as such has no bathroom, either go before the show or be prepared to leave for next door and return during the show. Finally, absolutely no phones, cameras or video are allowed while the performers are playing. If you can abide by these rules then you are in for a treat!
Fantastic!!! My husband and I have little exposure to jazz but we love great music. An amazing experience was had! We were treated to something extra special but I have a feeling that it is always extra special here. It was like being in the living room of a fantastic top-notch jazz band with all your relatives. Amazing. The band was so dynamic. Loved it. The music was so neat. Paying. for a seat benches was a must for us! The benches were study and fairly comfortable.
Will Smith and The Preservation Hall Band was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! We drove over from Houston and was so excited to experience the true spirit of New Orleans. If you are visiting New Orleans you must stop by to experience this live, authentic, jazz band experience. Get ready for about 50 minutes of singing, toe-tapping and hand-clapping true melodies and hymns from the soul. Loved, loved the clarinet player...never heard the clarinet played quite like that before!! As a former trumpet player and my husband a former drummer, our ears and hearts were truly blessed. Thank you to the drummer of the band for making us their "Guest of Honors!" This was an experience of a lifetime!!
