Story

3 Screens. Built in 1939. Operated by Landmark since 1976. Located in the upscale River Oaks Shopping Center at the corner of West Gray and Shepherd, the River Oaks is one of Houston's last true movie palaces, having kept its beautifully ornate Art Deco interior since it opened its doors in November, 1939, with the film Bachelor Mother starring David Niven and Ginger Rogers. The Houston Post described the theatre as “. . .thoroughly modern in every respect. Quiet dignity rather than garish display is reflected in the color scheme and appointments of the interior.” At its inception, the theatre was operated by the Interstate Theatre chain, run by Karl Hoblitzelle, who once said, “the entertainment industry, more than any other business, is built upon good relations with the public.” That policy still exists today as the management team of the River Oaks works very closely with many community groups in marketing independent and foreign language films.

The River Oaks has boasted many world premiere engagements and features an eclectic mix of Friday and Saturday midnight shows.

Visit the River Oaks for Houston's best independent film and foreign language cinema and cap the evening by visiting La Griglia or any of the other award-winning international restaurants surrounding the theatre.

Enjoy a drink before or after the film at the River Oaks Lounge:

This place is now closed, but I can’t help it. I haven’t been much of a google reviewer but this was my last place visited. I’ve only been attending this theater since 2011 or later as I wasn’t previously in the area, but I had many good times there. I think my first major screening on the downstairs main big screen was 2001: A Space Odyssey with college friends. I liked their selection of films but my husband would complain we always went there to see downers I liked the small hometown vibe in its Art Deco building from the late 1930s. It’s a shame it has closed. The first time I ever went to a film alone was here. Small consessions stand with drinks, popcorn, candy, beers and wine. A bar hangout area upstairs where restrooms and two smaller screens were located. They had an elevator for those who needed it. Friendly and helpful staff. I’m very sad they didn’t make it through COVID. Heartbreaking. There goes the neighborhood. I would always come out early and hit up the Barnes and Noble, Starbucks, or Epicure Cafe with our visits, sometimes even the Kroger down the road. The theater was what brought me to the area. Our last film there was The Father, which was appropriately heartbreaking. Thank you to all who made it a special place over the years. Only con for me was the seats, but I didn’t care much about that.
This was travel back in time for sure. It’s an OLD theater, they have done great with the upkeep, looks great. 1 screen, original box office outside. One concession stand, in small lobby then straight into the small theater with the big screen. The Rocky Horror Picture show was awesome. They put in a great show fir sure! Love you xm but the bag of supply’s for $2. Wish you could do it old school style bring your own water guns , toast , glitter etc . I want to go back and see an actual movie there. Lots of History. Can’t beat the price $11 for a great time !
My wife and I once moved to West Gray because we were sold on living down the street from this theater! Absolutely my favorite theater I've ever been too and have never seen a bad movie there. The film selection is great and they also have great popcorn!
This theatre was built in late1930’s in the Deco style of the era Originally one cinema with one screen converted to three screens. Hosts premiers special events. Still a normal movie theatre albeit one with a full bar upstairs. It has an ambiance you will never find at the mall cineplex. May favoured place to watch films. Parking can be a challenge. Arrive early cafes shopping adjacent to theatre.
Seen it on news that people were protesting and getting cars passing by to toot their horns, so decided to watch Nomadland great film at this venue. Sad reality is that Netflix combined with pandemic has changed movie theatres, and public will prob not go back to that way of entertainment in packed venues. It is outdated in comparison to an IMAX, no cup holders for drinks on chairs, the chairs are not as comfortable, and the selection of food available was just popcorn and M&Ms. Looks like the venue hasn't had investment for a long time, but hopefully the space can be used for something for all to enjoy.
Oldies in his best - Pure gold these days - Classic Theater you will enjoy every minute watching movies here: they choose only quality movies, If you are tall or big - the chairs are really uncomfortable! and downgrading your experience here!
A charming historical theater with an indoor bar. Their service is great and the theater is in pretty good shape, but expect less seat and leg room than theaters like AMC.
If you want to have a real old style cinema... if you are an essay movies fan... if you love that atmosphere of... I don’t know, I just love this movie theatre! Much better than much newer ones!
Love this vintage theater that hosts special events that allows audience participation.
One of the best spots to go in all of Houston for a fun night out. I love this movie theater's charm, film selections, and events. I regularly travel from outside the loop to get to River Oaks Theater and walk over to one of the restaurants for dinner after a movie. An absolute cultural gem! Highly recommend
