I recently had a hair transplant with Shapiro Medical Group (Ron) in March. I consulted with Matt before hand on many occasions and he was always willing to answer my questions and spend time with me. He was very helpful in explaining the benefits of FUT vs FUE and vice versa and ultimately left the choice up to me. I consulted with 3 other big HT transplant doctors as well and they all recommended FUT which is what I chose. This mainly came down to graft survival rate and number of hairs you can get in a session and lifetime. Matt also explained the necessary post op care as I was going need to follow since I was heading to Florida (ie always wear a hat in the sun and stay of pools).
Ron Shapiro and his staff were amazing during the surgery. Ron spent a lot of time with me the day before the surgery going over the entire surgery process. His staff was very caring and always made sure I felt comfortable during the surgery. I am looking forward to seeing the results in a few months!

Shapiro Medical did an excellent job with my hair transplant, from start to finish. They were personable, friendly, knowledgable, and make me comfortable throughout the entire process.
My experience started with a consultation with Matt. He was very experienced and knowledgable in the process and provided great detail about what I would experience. He informed me of the background information regarding FUE and Strip procedures without pushing me towards either option. He informed me of benefits to both and let me decide for myself which option I'd like to choose. He gave me the knowledge and background information so that I could make an informed decision for myself. He was very helpful and made me feel prepared for my procedure.
When I moved forward with the procedure, Shapiro made me as comfortable as they could. They put great effort and care into making be relaxed and comfortable. They provided lunch for me and let me order what I wanted beforehand. When I arrived in the morning, I was prepped by the team and we went over the itinerary for the day. They offered me beverages and ultimate comfort. The morning session consisted of extracting the strip. This part was totally painless as they did an excellent job numbing the area. I watched a movie while the morning session was being done. We paused for lunch and I was able to use the restroom and make any calls if I needed to.
The afternoon session went pretty well. This party consisted of the follicles being implanted. My back tends to get stiff from sitting for long periods of time, but overall it was pretty comfortable. I watched another movie with the afternoon session went on. After the procedure was over (early evening), the team went over steps for the coming days. They detailed all steps needed to care for the newly planted hair and for things to avoid. Overall, they were very thorough and did an excellent job going through everything with me.
After a few days, I went in for a post-op appointment, which consisted of a hair wash and monitoring the sutures. None of the sutures fell out, although they were a bit painful due to irritated skin. It was too bad, but was uncomfortable to sleep on.
The whole experience was exceptional, and Shapiro Medical took great care of me. I highly recommend Shapiro Medical Group to any other person interested in getting a hair transplant.

I can’t say enough good things about SMG as there are simply no words for the happiness and joy that their practice has brought to my life. When I was considering getting a procedure done, I contacted many different sources and clinics. I read up on different techniques and also consulted a large number of physicians. When I was ready to move forward, I found a well known physician in Madison, who was unable to schedule me due to his waitlist, but he referred me to SMG; he told me that they’re the best in the country and assured me that I would be in good hands. He was absolutely right.
SMG are true pioneers of hair restoration. Meeting with Matt Zupan (multiple times) was such a delight and he answered every question or concern I had with a well tailored and informed response only someone with over 25 years of experience could know. I would write and call him frequently (borderline obsessively) as I wanted to know every little detail about a potential procedure, whether it be strip or FUE. I also was curious to know more about the SMP procedures and other techniques but mostly wanted to be comfortable with expectations before moving forward; I was always inspired after every conversation with Matt as he would always inform me of the best recommended course and curb my somewhat unrealistic expectations. He also would mention potential oversights that could lead to an unnatural look. I am so thankful for his guidance, candor and for helping me with what he and I thought would work best for me as the results are beyond brilliant and appear blissfully natural. There really is no place like SMG. Their whole staff is so much more educated and refined than any other clinic and you can easily see the experience in action when you have a procedure done (which stems from the physicians). Dr. Ron and Dr. Paul are elite and have been pillars of hair restoration since the early 90’s and anyone who has had a procedure done by one of them would know that they truly are the best.

I can't review the procedure or the doctors as I didn't move forward, However, this was because I found the initial consultation a shambles. I had a guy called Matt who came across as rather unprofessional and a bit of a "wise guy". He didn't want to listen to anything I had to say and was quite ignorant on lots of aspects of the wider industry (I'd done lots of research!). He spent ages trying to sell me a strip transplant and how it was so much better than FUE before I was finally able to get a word in and let him know that he must have his clients confused because I had made it clear in my submitted documents that (re a transplant) I was only interested in FUE (as I keep my back and sides shaved short and don't want the big strip scar). Suddenly strip was not so good and FUE was great.
He was completely baffled by scalp micro-pigmentation even though it is a service that Shapiro Medical Group offer. Clearly didn't know anything about it and, for example, insisted it was especially no good because you have to shave your head every day with it. (This is wrong in so many ways, but most certainly for those using it to fill thinning hair. No shaving required at all let alone every day!).
Also he seemed unable to offer any advice on sunshine on an FUE transplant. Research seems to agree that keeping the transplanted hair out of direct sunlight for a month is best but he did not know this and even seemed unable to grasp the difference between recently-transplanted hair and one's regular hair. It was odd to say the least.
All in all it was a strange conversation which went down so many rabbit holes. I lost complete faith in SMG to do anything for me.
