Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center

About

The Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center is a comprehensive depository of artifacts and archival materials that celebrates African Americans in MS.

Story

The museum is housed in the former Smith Robertson Elementary School, the first public school building for black children in the city of Jackson, Mississippi. The school opened in 1894 and served the community until it was closed in 1971. The school was named for Mr. Smith Roberston, who was born a slave in Fayette, Alabama in 1847. After the Civil War, he migrated to Mississippi where he operated successful barbering businesses, was active in politics and was the first black alderman in the city of Jackson. Mr. Robertson died in 1899 and the school was named after him several years later. The museums collections include furnishings, clothing, fine arts, folk arts, books, papers, photographs, tools, equipment, instruments and other items. in addition to exhibits, the museum regularly sponsors seminars, workshops, lectures and other programs of interest to the public.
