Steak 'n Shake

About

Steak ‘n Shake is a classic American brand famous for the Original Steakburger™ and hand-dipped Milk Shakes. Stop in today for breakfast, lunch, dinner or late night. Dine in, drive thru or carryout.

Story

Steak ‘n Shake was founded in February, 1934 in Normal, Illinois. Gus Belt, Steak ‘n Shake’s founder, pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milk shakes. The Steak 'n Shake name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word “steak” stood for STEAKBURGER. The term “shake” stood for hand-dipped MILK SHAKES. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. To prove his point that his burgers were exceptionally prime, he would wheel in a barrel of steaks (including round, sirloin, and T-bones) and grind the meat into burgers right in front of the guests. Hence arose the origin of our famous slogan, “In Sight It Must Be Right.” After 79 years, we are continuing Steak n Shake’s tradition of serving the country’s best, freshest, and tastiest burgers and shakes.

Dinning room is now open and one thing to note is that you will no longer be greater and seated. Instead you have access to any of the 4 self order stations. The stations are very user friendly, easy enough to navigate adding and removing things from any order. Once completed you receive a number to listen for your order pick up. Fast service and plenty of staff working to assist if you happened to need anything.
The person taking my order in the drive thru was very nice and my order was ready quickly; however my steak burger was barely cooked. It was soft and a little pink in the middle and no sear whatsoever, I could barely eat it. I ordered sweet tea and was given unsweet. They were out of the toast for the frisco melt. The fries and shakes were good and I'm usually not one to leave a review and I was really hoping for a better experience because I was so excited it being open again. I'll try it again in the future hopefully next time will be better
The double hamburger and fries meal was wonderful. I'm glad they are dive through open. My loss is no hand dipped milk shakes and the half empty fry container. Jalapeno?
Recently reopened after being closed even before the pandemic. It used to be an absolute pit with awful service and filthy conditions. This visit it was much cleaner, though its hard to rate the service since you never actually interact with the staff. Upon entering you now make your order at a digital kiosk from a significantly reduced menu. Food is the same as it ever was, better than most fast food but nothing amazing. There a no vegetarian burger or mains that I could see and very limited sides. ++Much cleaner than it used to be +Food is above average =Order at kiosk, don't really interact with staff -Limited Menu --No real vegetarian or vegan options yes I know it's called "Steak and Shake", but something would be nice
They have completely changed the setup for Steak 'n Shake!! It is no longer a waitstaff restaurant. When you walk in, there are now ordering kiosks!!! They have both cash and credit cards kiosks. You place your order, find a table, and they call you up to the counter when your food is ready!! Very fast and efficient!! The food is still just as good as I remember, and the shakes are awesome!! I highly recommend you check them out if you haven't been in a while!!
Not what it used to be. I understand the need for automation I'd rather it be robotic than shuttered, but the atmosphere is missing. Steak and Shake used to be packed with teens and families and the servers were usually fun kids that weren't jaded by the industry yet. It was a good time. Now it's a very desolate experience. That's progress I guess. The food was still great
Are you kidding me?! Just got home, looked at my drink because it felt light in comparison to my wife's. Like 1/3 of the drink isn't even there. I am so tired of customer service being so negligent. This is my drink without a single sip taken out. Absolutely pathetic.
I love Steak and Shake and usually go to the one on the Outer Loop. But since I was in the area I stopped in this one which reopened. My experience at this one was not what have become accustomed to at the other location . What I can say is that the Steak Burgers were very overcooked and way too crispy on the edges and made them not tasteful. They were not juicy but dried out. The fries were marginally warm. A couple people in our party got shakes and those were pretty good they said. The sun was coming in the windows so much we had to lower the shade and when we did it was absolutely filthy and the windows/window shades appear not to have been cleaned in a very long time. They had no napkins in the dispensers so I asked for some and they gave me some but they still never stocked the dispensers so it did not fix the problem for others that were looking for napkins as well. This location needs to step it up a little bit and get some things clean and then do a little bit better job with the product being sold.
Visited store #703. Been a couple of years since I last visited with family - it will be another couple of years if ever I return. Here is why: Food - Bought a bacon double combo. The burger had little taste. The fries were not seasoned. Got a strawberry shake and it asked me to pay an extra $0.40 for whipped cream… really? This nickel and dime people for every little thing, like whipped cream for a milkshake, is out of control. There’s a reason why a number of these locations are closing.
I like their new counter ordering concept. Always thought they have the best fast food burgers. Now they also have awesome service. This time we ate at the restaurant and a manager came around to check on us. They also brought our order to the table and got plastic ware for us. Nice touch, but not necessary with the new concept.Food: 5/5
