The Center for Ocular Prosthetics, LLC creates detailed, custom-made ocular prothestics (artificial eyes), for those young and old alike, transforming the appearances of prisoners, priests and everyone in between.
Based in Portland, Oregon and representing a professional of less than 150 board-certified ocularists in the United States, Mr. Harwin combines advanced degrees in both science and fine art. Harwin's talent and attention to detail has been recognized across the country and was the subject of an award-winning short documentary entitled "Ocularist," which won numerous awards, including at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival.
The Center for Ocular Prosthetics's patients have ranged from the tiniest of babies to the elderly. They may be victims of rosebushes, fireworks or birth defects. Despite the state of medical reimbursement, Harwin takes the time to get to know each of his patients and personalizes their eye with a tiny drawing of their choice. This serves the dual purpose of identifying the top of the eye (for correct insertion) and creating a one-of-a-kind product.
