We came to DC during memorial weekend. We walked around the gardens and took pictures from the outside, but didn't have the time to go inside. It was my husband's first time and he was so impressed by the moon garden and the building. The building is really nice and does look like a castle. He loved it.
Smithsonian Castle Information Center is an excellent first stop to learn about the various museums and what to see. It is built of red sandstone and looks like a Medieval Revival style building. James Smithson’s crypt is in a small chapel like room. There is a historic carousel at the north entrance. There is also a beautiful garden.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
The Smithsonian Castle is a quaint building that offers an extensive history of the museum series and institution. Here, one can explore the beautiful outdoor gardens, appreciate the classic stone architecture, and develop a master understanding of the world's anthropological, archeological, and historical collections. Whether one is on a business trip or a family vacation, this gorgeous destination should not be missed.
Great Place to spend few hours for relaxing views in the heart of DC! Stunning architecture. Entry is free, street parking is likely impossible to get. We have parked 0.6 miles away from this place! But the walking is worth it as you can explore DC.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
This is such a cool thing to see in Washington D.C.! I’ve been here so many times and have never noticed this castle! It is free to enter, and no tickets are required. Unfortunately, not much of the castle is open to the public, but the parts that are open are super neat! If you’re waking around the National Mall, or are in the area, check this place out!
It is a beautiful historic building/castle with great story behind it! So remember if you go for a visit take a tour and learn about it as its story is amazing! Actually take a museum tour to learn more about all of the museum’s in national mall in less than 2 hours! Stories are just unbelievable.
James Smithson - What a guy! Left all his inheritance to a new country he’d never even been to. This castle is a great tribute to his British heritage and his legacy on the National Mall with artefacts from all the various museums. His tomb is located here along with a brief history of his life which is unfortunately not well documented. Lovely gardens around the castle with shady spots to relax in.
I’ve lived in the DC area for over 7 years and this was my first time venturing inside the Castle. Quick summary- cafe, restrooms, history on the Smithsonian’s and artifacts. Honestly, it was okay and educational. I think I spent maybe 35 minutes inside without getting any food from the cafeteria. They have a hall with variety exhibits from all the Smithsonian’s and tons of artifacts. It just wasn’t jaw dropping because it’s a small exhibit compared to other Smithsonian’s. They do have a guide to the other Smithsonian’s in the area as well. Honestly, If you never go hear you’ll be missing anything great in my opinion.
If you're visiting the Smithsonian museums, it's worth stopping at the Castle for a bit of the institute's history and a small selection of items from the different museums. The building itself is stunning. There's a cafe and gift shop too.Visited onWeekendWait time30–60 minReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Interesting building with lots of things to see inside and outside. Right now they have real-life size 3D printed sculptures of notorious women in different areas of expertise. Definitely worth a visit! Restrooms available very cleanVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
