At first I was a bit surprised at the prices, as they are quite high. However, I can see that they would rather justify the prices rather than apologize for the quality; all their ice cream is made from grass fed dairy, with locally sourced ingredients. One taste is all the proof you need, even the waffle cones are delicious. Limited seating on hot, busy nights, but that's NYC. You must try the Honeycomb!!

This is something of a spilt review. The ice cream itself is excellent. Creamy, with fresh, natural flavors. The mint tastes like mint, not like "mint." That would be an easy five stars. The staff can, however, bring more than a small dose of Brooklyn hipster attitude. Not always, and not everyone, but often enough that it's not a one-bad-night thing. That would merit three stars at best.

Amazing ice cream, plenty of vegan options too. The $9 milkshake is worth it, but the straws are way too skinny for how chunky some of their flavors are; causing you to have to drink it without a straw. Kinda weird. Another plus is that the line, which gets very long on hot days, seems to move pretty fast. Heads up, this place is cashless unless you want to leave a tip lol.

When a business doesn't accept cash, they alienate poor people, people with bad credit and those with maxed out cards. There are also racial implications, people of color don't use credit cards as much. Customers are put in embarrassing situations after they are handed a cone, take a bite, then are informed that cash is not accepted for their $4 transaction. They also involve banks in the transaction and subject people to paying interest. The clerk says that it prevents theft. My advise to the owners is to get your house in order. Figure out a way to deal with your internal problems without burdening your customer. I will never go back.

Their ice cream is good, but expensive. It’s sold for more reasonable prices in grocery stores, at least in some around Brooklyn. This review is for a coffee, which I decided to grab as I walked by one evening, and I saw their full espresso drink menu. I mean, okay, it’s an ice cream place and you can’t expect them to do everything well, but they have an espresso machine and a coffee menu, so I don’t think it was unreasonable. The coffee was not so good. It tasted like they made a latte out of weak drip coffee, not espresso. Maybe too much milk, maybe too little coffee once brewed or in the brewing. Short story is that I’ll go to one of the many coffee places in Smith for coffee in the future, and save Van Leeuwen stops for when I want to indulge in pricy ice cream.
