About

Modern Mexican cuisine with global inspiration.

Story

The words “cozy” and “margarita” are rarely used in the same sentence, but when you describe Xochitl, those are two words you just might line up together. At this Headhouse Square staple (pronounced “so-cheet,” meaning flower in the Aztec language, Nahuatl), you’ll find flickering candles, Mexican tiles, carved woodwork, brightly painted walls and music that transports you out of America; cozy properly sums it up. It’s the type of place you might stop by for happy hour and find yourself sitting in the same barstool three hours later.
After changing ownership in the summer of 2011, Xochitl’s quality hasn’t wavered. The service is as friendly and attentive as ever, and the vibe remains relaxed. While the food has its ambitious moments — like the deconstructed tamale served without its typical corn husk — there’s no pretension, simply a solid, modern play on classic Mexican fare. Both custom-ordered guacamole and ceviche serve as perfect starters, and from there, it can become a Tecate and taco night. Or you can make it a tequila flight, short rib and red snapper affair. Either way, prepare to leave wanting to return to Xochitl.

"The words “cozy” and “margarita” are rarely used in the same sentence, but when you describe Xochitl, those are two words you just might line up together. At this Headhouse Square staple we prided ourselves on being not your typical taqueria. In between flickering candles and hand-squeezed margaritas, it’s not hard to see why we’ve become the neighborhood’s home away from home. Bringing a modern twist to recipes that have been passed down our family for generations and exclusive tequilas you can't find anywhere else, fun times and flavor are always on the menu. So no matter the occasion, bring a friend and join us -- we’ll always make you feel like part of the familia."

I visited on my Birthday and I did enjoy the food along with the service. I recommend the guacamole to start, taste so fresh and is made to order. You have options of what you want in your guacamole. The short rib tacos were delish. The Ultimate Margarita pairs nicely lol, along with the churros!
Real Mexican food. People choice guacamole sounded odd but so good. Drinks we got margaritas perfectly mixed. I had tacos and my husband had the enchiladas both were amazing. I usually never get tacos at a restaurant because I think it won't be enough food, this was enough, we both left stuffed and no room for dessert. Waiter was very kind. Will recommend to anyone in the area.
the cook on the shrimp was amazing. whoever was on grill was superb. loved the tres leches cake dense yet flavorful and not too sweet. i had gone for restaurant week. the dressing on the salad was spicy which was good. the salmon was amazing. chorizo tacos was meh couldn't really taste it tasted more of the other meat.
Absolutely excellent gourmet mexican food restaurant! The service was wonderful and we got to eatoutside right on the street ! The entire experience truly made us feel like we were in some European country eating outside on the cobblestone streets!
Went on a Sunday night so it was quiet and not too busy. I had the spicy brisket tacos and yucca fries the fries were spicier than the tacos and they both were very good. The margaritas were small for the price but very tasty. Cute place with excellent/fast service. We’re looking forward to our next visit!
Great vegetable tacos, as well as the Blood Orange Margarita. Best thing is the customizable guacamole menu.
Simply put, EVERYTHING on the menu is made FRESH! Hands down best tacos in Philly and I have had many, many tacos from all over the city. More than just meat in a tortilla~ Delicious layers of textures and flavors OH, and btw, NO soggy tortillas! Savory juices served on the side for convenient dipping Guacamole is made to order with your choice of veggies to add or exclude for picky eaters! I highly recommend the prickly pear margaritas~ They juice the prickly pears themselves Great service. Nice staff. Head House Square, right above South Street.
Perfect place in Philly for Mexican food and drinks. The Guacamole and Fish/Shrimp tacos are amazing. We love the surprise Tequila and Mezcal drinks that Kabila makes for us. This is the perfect place for date night or just starting off your night in Philadelphia before seeing Elton John.
If you want the freshest Hispanic food in the city come here without a doubt...classic margarita all day every day!!! With top notch Service!!! Great birthday dinner for my brother
The food was alright but I was disappointed with the service. My girlfriend and I ordered 1 round of margaritas and that was it. The server didn't ask us if we wanted another round of drinks when our glasses were empty. We did plan on getting 2 rounds of margaritas to try the different options. The server never checked up on us after we got the food. I felt like the server was giving more attention to other customers and I can hear the server telling other tables about the specials and making sure they were ok. This place needs a bar rescue. It's place with potential. I understand times are tough for restaurants, but I've been to a lot of small restaurants past year and they ask if I want more food or drinks when my glass or plate was empty. I will not be going back to this place.
