AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario

About

We're one of the largest museums in North America bringing people and art together.

Description

Our Mission: We bring art and people together and boldly declare that Art Matters.

The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) (French: Musée des beaux-arts de l'Ontario) is an art museum in Toronto's Downtown Grange Park district, on Dundas Street West between McCaul Street and Beverley Street. Our collection includes more than 80,000 works spanning the 1st century to the present-day. The gallery has 45,000 square metres (480,000 sq ft) of physical space, making it one of the largest galleries in North America.

Significant collections include the largest collection of Canadian art, an expansive body of works from the Renaissance and the Baroque eras, European art, African and Oceanic art, and a modern and contemporary collection. The photography collection is a large part of the collection, as well as an extensive drawing and prints collection. The museum contains many significant sculptures, such as in the Henry Moore sculpture centre, and represents other forms of art like historic objects, miniatures, frames, books and medieval illuminations, film and video art, graphic art, installations, architecture, and ship models.

During the AGO's history, it has hosted and organized some of the world's most renowned and significant exhibitions, and continues to do so, to this day.

Over the last three decades, the gallery has seen four major expansions and renovations, typically considered a high amount and unseen by most galleries of the world, and continues to add spaces today. The gallery recently built the Weston Family Learning Centre, and is building a David Milne Research Centre, designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects. It's last major renovations have seen architects like John C. Parkin, Barton Myers, KPMB Architects, and most recently, Frank Gehry.

Now that I live very close to the AGO. I figured I would become a member. Love going here when it's not busy and sitting in a few areas. Mainly Group of Seven Section it's typically very quiet, even when there's a lot of people walking around. I wish they would have more classical art work or exhibits and have better hours. It's still a great place to visit, even if you are just visiting. Be prepared to spend 3 hours or more if you want to see and enjoy all the AGO has to offer.
Exhibits change frequently so it’s a great place to visit on your own, with family or friends. It’s worth while you get the annual pass and be able to visit as much as you want in a year. They have an eating b stress of you want to bring your own food especially for kids. Or they have food for purchase inside but of course it’s a little pricey. There is a lovely cafe on n the second floor with nice views of the museum. The kids love to visit when there are art activities. Kids are also free admission! Lots to see at the gallery. It can be busy on holidays and peak times. I’d recommend going off peak times so you have space and time to see what you want. If you have a pass you can see a little at a time and just come back.
The Art Gallery of Ontario is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. The collection is impressive, covering everything from classic European masterpieces to contemporary installations. The building itself is a work of art, with a modern design that blends seamlessly with the historical sections. The layout is spacious and well-organized, creating an inviting atmosphere to explore the artworks. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to assist. The AGO offers educational programs and activities for all ages. While it can get crowded, it's worth it for the incredible art on display. Don't miss the café, restaurant, and gift shop. Overall, the AGO is a remarkable art destination that shouldn't be missed.
The best thing about the AGO is that it's free for ages 25 and younger! Unfortunately it is not cheap for memberships for ages 26+, and I probably wouldn't visit if it were paid. There are some good exhibits, my favourite one has to be the model ships downstairs. I'm not a huge art fan but they do have temporarily exhibits such as KAWs. Overall it's a clean art gallery, well organized with coat check free for prohibited items like bags. I recommend you buy tickets online to avoid the lineup. There is a gift shop and a Bistro inside. I wish it had longer hours on weekdays.
I love the AGO! There are always new exhibits and it’s such a lovely museum. There’s also the 25 and under pass that will give you free admission. Definitely worth checking out.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
A great spot for art lovers/people who can appreciate art - they have paintings and art pieces made from many different types of materials. You could honestly spend a couple hours here - great date spot, place to explore with friends/family. I went in to check out their KAWS family exhibit which was very enjoyable. The KAWS family exhibit has a bunch of fun, colourful, and vibrant pieces which makes me understand why it’s so popular around the world.
I went there for my 12th year job anniversary... best gift to myself. Paintings were amazing!! Loved every bit of it.. their bistro Cafe was amazing as well.. trout and Mac cheese so deliciousVisited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
Beautiful works of art with tastes for everyone. There's an entire floor of Canadian art! I was there for three hours and I didn't really get a chance to see it all. It's the Met of Toronto Check out the building. It's beautifully constructed, but not in an obtrusive way. The winding staircase beckons the visitor to explore the next level.
Such an amazing experience at the Kaws exhibition and already looking forward to the new exhibitions coming this November! The layout is so easy to figure out and it was great seeing pieces from all over the world.
A nice art gallery with a diverse and interesting range of collections. The building sprawls and it is possible to get a bit lost inside. The Canadian art collection was very interesting, and it was nice to contrast and compare the styles with European painters. The shop is huge and well stocked, but the 'anyone' toilets are a bit confusing.
