Description

The Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center transforms this globally unique destination into an exciting adventure where learning comes naturally through hands-on activities. As the gateway to the Pine Bush, the Discovery Center introduces visitors to everything that makes the Preserve rare and adventurous. With the help of many volunteers, the Discovery Center offers monthly outings and programs about the ecology, natural and cultural history of the pine bush area. The Pine Bush also provides hundreds of volunteers and partners with a rewarding opportunity for hands-on conservation
work. Volunteer researchers help by monitoring rare species and studying habitat quality. Through boundary posting, trail clearing, habitat restoration and interpretive projects, other volunteers are working to make the Preserve safe and enjoyable for all who visit and live here.

Mission

Intense efforts by the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission have protected over 3,300 acres of this beautiful ecosystem. Additional acres, in cooperation with willing landowners will be added until the Preserve is complete. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission consists of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, NYS Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation, City of Albany, Towns of Colonie, and Guilderland, The Nature Conservancy, Albany County and four private citizen representatives. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission was created by the NYS Legislature in 1988 to protect and manage the unique and endangered natural communities and species of the Albany Pine Bush for ecological, recreational and educational benefits. Free admission and free parking. Several shorter walking trails 1 mile up to 7 miles if you combine several that are extremely well marked. Easy to get to. Great way to get out into nature for a couple of hours. Restrooms: Clean Dog-friendliness: Dog are allowed Picnic area: Small area with benches. Clean.
Best place to go for a walk in Albany by far. Just beautiful scenery. It's a little loud at the start, being near a highway, but once you walk deeper into the trail it becomes quiet and serene. I will say though, don't do any trails around here in flip flops since your feet will get really dirty. The trails are covered with sand and are expansive, covering many miles with many trail heads to start out from, not just the most common ones at the vistor center.
A great place to learn and hike! All the facilities and staff are wonderful. Lots of trails. Fun for the whole family. Check out their website for events. Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
We hiked the preserve from the Six Mile Waterworks trailhead. It was a fairly flat trail and essentially circled the lake. The trails were fairly well maintained. The big “downer” for us was all the vehicle noise from the Northway and I-90. Could not actually hear much nature for all of the vehicle noise. We really enjoy the Pine Bush, but we will not return to this unit for future hikes.
The welcome center is new and worth the visit. The trails are well marked and easy for every age. The educational posters are worth stopping and reading. Love it and will definitely come back.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Great place for easy pleasant hike through woods and along pine bush. Birds chirping, but some annoying insects. Highway noise near the end of the Yellow Trail.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree

Ample parking in the main lot. Helpful staff who can recommend trails based on interest and who can tell how to get to the offsite trailheads. Visitor center has displays. Restrooms at visitor center area. Varied trails. Some traverse dunes.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
Very well marked and maintained trails. Mostly sandy so they dry out quickly when most other trails are muddy in the spring. Great place for doggos.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entryFree
Loved it! I love the opportunity to teach my kids anything.. and this gave me so many tools and they really enjoyed themselves! Loved the microscopes and the teachers educating on the turtles and how to properly handle them and wash hands. Absolutely loved this. Thank you!
