The mission of American Red Cross Biomedical Services is to fulfill the needs of the American people for the safest, most reliable and most cost-effective blood services through voluntary donations.
The Red Cross empowers ordinary people to perform extraordinary acts of service. Our blood donors are ordinary people — high school students, factory and office workers, business executives, parents and grandparents, and people from every walk of life. But they share one thing: a generous spirit, a desire to give back to their community and help others. Blood donors play an integral role in the delivery of modern health care. Many lifesaving medical treatments and procedures involve blood transfusions and would not be possible without a safe and reliable blood supply.
The American Red Cross is where people mobilize to help their neighbors—across the street, across the country, and across the world—in emergencies. Each year, in communities large and small, victims of nearly 66,000 disasters turn to neighbors familiar and new—the nearly 330,000 volunteers and 23,000 employees of the Red Cross.
Through nearly 275 locally supported chapters, more than 6 million people gain the skills they need to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their homes, communities and world.
Roughly 3 million people give blood—the gift of life—through the Red Cross, making it the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. And the Red Cross helps thousands of U.S. service members separated from their families by military duty stay connected.
