The Asian American Student Union is an agency of the Student Government Association at The Florida State University, and was founded in 1996 by co-founders Faye Hunt and Rich Sealy. Due to the growing Asian and Asian American student body at FSU, the Asian Student Union was created to represent the Asian community at Florida State. The organization once known as Asian Student Union had transitioned to the Asian American Student Union during the 2006-2007 academic year under the leadership of former AASU Director, Zach Heng.
Through the past few years, the Asian American Student Union has expanded to represent 10 other Asian cultural organizations, and increased membership to the hundreds. AASU is involved in and hosts multiple events which create a stronger bond among FSU students by spreading knowledge and appreciation of Asian culture, as well as engaging the campus at The Florida State University on current important AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) issues.
The Asian American Student Union shall represent the Asian American community at The Florida State University and shall spread awareness about Asian American heritage and culture. The AASU will serve to encourage and promote for the civic engagement of the Asian and Asian-American community, as well as the student body at The Florida State University. It shall function as an educational and cultural learning instrument for the FSU community, by providing cultural programs and materials, which promote awareness of and appreciation for the various and distinct Asian cultures. The AASU shall serve as the nucleus of a network to improve the opportunities and living conditions of the Asian community. To this end, the AASU shall represent all registered Asian and Asian American student organizations on campus, coordinate available resources, and serve as a catalyst in protecting the rights and representation of the Asian and Asian American student body.
