The athletic training major is part of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER). The curriculum is designed to ensure students have the disciplinary knowledge and professional skills necessary for success in the profession.
Augustana's athletic training program (ATP) is a four-year degree program that combines strong didactic and clinical education. Students receive a solid education in both theory and practical application of athletic training.
Hands-on experience in applying the theories of athletic training is the corner stone of our program. Athletic training students (ATS) become an integral part of our sports medicine program. As the students' knowledge and skills increase, so does their involvement in delivering health care services to the NCAA Division II athletes of Augustana College. in addition, our ATS are required to participate in clinical education with local high schools and sports medicine clinics.
Through our HPER department, Augustana offers students a degree in Athletic Training. Our Athletic Training curriculum prepares students to become eligible for the national Board of Certification (BOC) examination to become a Certified Athletic Trainer. Our curriculum design is structured to provide a progressive sequence of didactic course work and clinical education experiences that include all the domains of Athletic Training as defined by the Role Delineation Study (fifth edition) and NATA Athletic Training Education Competencies (fifth edition). This includes risk management, injury prevention, assessment and evaluation, acute care of the injury and illness, pharmacology, therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercise. general medical conditions and disabilities, nutritional aspects of injury and illness, psychosocial intervention and referral, health care administration and professional developmental responsibilities.
